Ski & Winter Switzerland
Your complete guide to Swiss Alps skiing, mountain resorts, and winter adventures
You're at Zermatt. It's December, powder day. The Matterhorn rises above. This is world-class skiing.
Swiss skiing is legendary—Zermatt, Verbier, St. Moritz offer exceptional terrain. Expensive (CHF 70-90 day pass, €400+ weekly accommodation) but impeccable grooming, modern lifts, stunning scenery. Popular resorts: Zermatt (best), Verbier (freeride), St. Moritz (luxury), Grindelwald (family), Davos (varied terrain).
Season Dec-April, some glaciers year-round. Peak Feb-March brings reliable snow, sunshine. Book accommodation months ahead.
Zermatt—ski beneath the Matterhorn
Zermatt has 360km of pistes, 52 lifts, 1,620m vertical drop. Car-free village, Matterhorn views, glacier skiing year-round.
Klein Matterhorn cable car reaches 3,883m—highest in Europe. Summer skiing on glaciers. Spring sunshine skiing unbeatable.
Linked to Cervinia Italy—ski two countries one day. No border checks, valid lift pass for both.
Village is expensive—hotels CHF 200-500/night, restaurants CHF 30-60 per meal. But infrastructure, scenery, snow quality justify prices.
Activities beyond skiing: Gornergrat railway, ice palace, winter hiking, mountaineering routes. Never boring.
Verbier—freeride paradise
Verbier has 410km pistes in 4 Vallées region. Steep terrain, off-piste opportunities, expert-focused. Not for beginners.
Mont Fort glacier (3,330m) offers high-altitude skiing, panoramic views. Itinéraire trails for advanced skiers—red/black difficulty.
Lively après-ski scene—chalet bars, nightlife, international crowd. More party than Zermatt, less luxury than St. Moritz.
Accommodation in chalets and apartments. Self-catering common—saves money on expensive restaurant meals.
Season Dec-April. Best snow Jan-March. Spring skiing April excellent with sunshine.
Family-friendly resorts—Grindelwald, Wengen
Grindelwald/Wengen in Jungfrau region offer family skiing—gentle slopes, ski schools, car-free Wengen village charm.
Jungfraujoch excursion possible mid-ski trip—take train to Top of Europe (3,454m), return same day. Tourist highlight.
Grindelwald First has toboggan runs, winter hiking. Wengen more traditional, quieter, authentic Swiss village feel.
Smaller than Zermatt/Verbier but more manageable for families. Ski schools excellent. English-speaking instructors.
Accommodation CHF 150-300/night—cheaper than Zermatt. Self-catering saves money. Supermarkets in Grindelwald.
St. Moritz and Davos—variety and luxury
St. Moritz is glamorous—hosted Olympics twice, invented alpine tourism. 350km pistes, designer boutiques, wealthy clientele. Expensive.
Davos-Klosters has 300km pistes, varied terrain, good value (by Swiss standards). Less pretentious than St. Moritz.
Both offer excellent infrastructure, reliable snow, stunning Engadin scenery. Glacier Express and Bernina Express accessible.
Cross-country skiing popular—prepared tracks, equipment rentals. Nordic tradition strong in Switzerland.
Accommodation expensive—book early. Consider Pontresina (near St. Moritz) for cheaper base with same mountain access.
