🚆 From Zurich Airport to City Center

Train (Fastest & Most Convenient)

Direct trains run every 10 minutes between the airport and Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main station). Journey time: 12 minutes. Ticket: CHF 7.

Tram

Tram 10 connects the airport to the city. Journey time: 30 minutes. Cheaper but slower than the train.

Taxi

Available at the airport. Journey time: 15-20 minutes. Cost: CHF 60-80 to city center. Expensive option.

Train from neighboring countries—France, Germany, Italy, Austria all have excellent rail connections to Switzerland. High-speed trains from Paris, Milan, Munich. Very convenient.

Scenic train routes—Bernina Express from Italy, Glacier Express across Switzerland. More than transport—these are experiences.

Road entry—Excellent highways connect Switzerland to all neighboring countries. Vignette (highway sticker) required—CHF 40 annually. Buy at border crossings.

Bus services—FlixBus and other operators connect major European cities to Switzerland. Cheapest option but slower.

Lake ferries—Lake Geneva, Lake Constance have ferry services connecting Swiss towns with France and Germany. Scenic and leisurely.

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area but NOT in the EU. Most Western passport holders can enter visa-free for tourism (90 days within 180 days).

🚗 Getting Around Switzerland

Trains (SBB/CFF/FFS)

Switzerland's train network is legendary—punctual, clean, scenic, and comprehensive. Connects all major cities and most mountain villages. Book at sbb.ch

Buses (PostBus)

Yellow PostBuses reach remote mountain villages where trains don't go. Integrated with train schedules. Essential for reaching hiking trailheads.

Cable Cars & Mountain Railways

Part of the public transport system. Cable cars ascend to mountain peaks and ski resorts. Often covered by Swiss Travel Pass.

🎫 Swiss Travel Pass

Consider the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited train, bus, and boat travel. Includes many mountain railways and free museum entry. Available for 3, 4, 8, or 15 consecutive days. Essential for tourists.

🚋 Local Transportation in Swiss Cities

All Swiss cities have excellent trams, buses, and sometimes boats. Zurich has trams and S-Bahn. Geneva has trams and buses. Basel has trams.

Tickets & Passes

  • Day passes: Usually best value for tourists (CHF 8-15 depending on city)
  • Mobile apps: SBB Mobile app works nationwide - buy tickets easily
  • Honor system: No barriers, but inspectors check regularly. Fines are steep (CHF 100+)

Public transport is clean, safe, and runs on time. Signage is in local language plus usually German, French, Italian, and English.

🚙 Renting a Car

Generally NOT necessary in Switzerland due to excellent public transport. However, useful for exploring remote areas and having flexibility.
