💑 Romantic Taiwan

Your complete guide to romantic travel and relaxation in Taiwan

The red lanterns glow above you, their reflection scattered across the dark harbour below. Jiufen at night, the old tea house terrace, a pot of high-mountain oolong between you, the coastline dropping away into the Pacific. No one is in a hurry here. This is not sightseeing. This is just being somewhere beautiful, quietly.

Taiwan combines elements rare in any single destination: hot spring bathing in mountain hotels, candlelit dinners in historic buildings, private tea ceremonies in hillside teahouses, and a wild east coast where cliffs drop straight into clear water. The island is intimate in scale — you can move between dramatically different romantic experiences within the same day.

Sun Moon Lake, Jiufen, the Hualien coast, and Beitou hot spring district each offer a completely different romantic register. Taiwan is not flashy about romance — it's quiet, sensory, and deeply satisfying.

Sun Moon Lake — Taiwan's Romantic Heart

Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County is Taiwan's largest natural lake — deep blue water ringed by forest-covered mountains. The lake's surface catches morning mist that burns off slowly. You can rent a bicycle and ride the perimeter path at your own pace. The western (Sun) and eastern (Moon) shores have different characters — the Moon side has quieter cycling paths through cypress and bamboo forest.

Accommodation ranges from lakeside boutique hotels to mountain resort properties. The Lalu Hotel, a converted government guesthouse, sits directly on the lakeshore with lake-view infinity pools. Dinner on a floating pontoon restaurant with lake views is the romantic standard here — book ahead for a window table.

The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway connects Shuili Snake Kiln to Formosan Aboriginal Village across the lake — cable cars are glass-floored with sweeping views. At weekends, take the earliest ropeway to beat queues, then cycle the lake path while the mist still lies on the water and the day-trippers haven't arrived yet.

Beitou Hot Springs — Taipei's Thermal Retreat

Beitou Hot Spring District sits at the end of MRT line 2 in north Taipei, 30 minutes from the city centre. Three types of spring water are found here: white sulphur, sodium bicarbonate, and the rare radium-containing green spring at Difang Hot Spring (one of only two in the world). The Plum Garden Japanese-era villa has preserved its original bath complex as a museum.

Beitou has both public outdoor hot spring parks and private onsen hotels. For a romantic evening, book a private room with in-room hot spring bath — hotels like Hot Spring Hotel B: Beitou and Gaia Hotel & Resort offer private bath rentals without needing to stay overnight. Soak in the evening when the mountain air cools and steam rises from the pool.

East Coast: Wild Cliffs and Sea Light

The Suhua Highway from Hualien north to Su'ao is one of Asia's great scenic drives — cut into cliffs high above the Pacific, with no guardrail on much of the route. White water crashes far below. You drive around blind corners and suddenly the ocean stretches to the horizon. Travel by scooter if you want to stop whenever you choose.

Qingshui Cliffs are Taiwan's most dramatic coastal feature — vertical drops from mountain summits directly into the Pacific. The coast includes sea arches and sea caves accessible only by small boat from Hualien harbour. Kayaking along the cliff base at sunrise with local guides gives views impossible from any road.

🌟 Top Romantic Experiences

🏮 Jiufen Evening Tea Ceremony

Stay in Jiufen until the lanterns light at dusk, then find a window table at a hillside teahouse. Order a pot of Alishan oolong or Oriental Beauty with the full ceremony set — small clay teapot, gaiwan, multiple tiny cups. The harbour below, the red lanterns above, the Pacific faint in the background. One of the most atmospherically perfect evenings in Taiwan. Check the last bus back to Ruifang before you go — the schedule changes seasonally. More info →

🌊 Sun Moon Lake Cycling at Sunrise

Rent bicycles at the Shuishe Pier early — before the day-trippers arrive — and ride the quiet north shore path as mist lifts off the water. Stop at Xuanzang Temple for views across the full lake, then continue as the landscape shifts from Sun-side to Moon-side shore. Return the bikes and take an afternoon boat cruise before the last light fades. Best in autumn and spring when the skies are clearest. More info →

♨️ Private Hot Spring Bath in Beitou

Book a private tatami-room hot spring at a Beitou onsen hotel for an evening soak. The sodium bicarbonate spring water — known locally as the "Beauty Spring" — is colourless, silky-soft, and slightly alkaline. Private bath rooms are available without an overnight stay. Bring nothing — towels, toiletries, and cotton robes are provided. Arrive in the evening when the day crowds have left and the mountain air cools outside. More info →

🌺 Taroko Blue Cave Kayak Tour

A guided sunrise kayak along the base of Qingshui Cliffs from Hualien — entering sea arches and sea caves only accessible by small boat at low tide. The cliffs drop sheer into the ocean. The cave interior reflects blue-green light from the water. Departures are timed to arrive at the cave at first light. Small groups only, book well ahead — this is one of Taiwan's most extraordinary couple experiences. More info →

🌸 Yangmingshan Cherry Blossom Walk

Yangmingshan National Park has Taiwan's most accessible cherry blossoms — wild cherry trees lining the mountain paths, blooming in late winter to early spring. Pair the blossom walk with a soak at Lengshuikeng's outdoor hot spring foot pools. Pack a simple picnic. The combination — cold mountain air, pink blossoms, warm spring water — is quietly perfect. Avoid weekends at peak bloom when traffic to the park backs up significantly. More info →

🏛️ Hayashi Department Store & Tainan Old Streets

The Hayashi Department Store opened in 1932 as Tainan's first modern department store — fully restored, it now houses local design brands, a rooftop Shinto shrine, and a restaurant with views across the old city. The surrounding streets of West Central District are Tainan's most atmospheric: narrow lanes of Dutch, Qing, and Japanese colonial architecture lit at night by red lanterns. Tainan is Taiwan's most romantic city after dark. More info →

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🌸 Jiufen timing — arrive after 5pm when day-trippers leave. Evening changes the village entirely: lanterns on, crowds thinning, the harbour going dark below. Stay until the last bus and you'll have it almost to yourselves.
  • ♨️ Book private Beitou baths in advance — the best private onsen hotels fill up on weekends. Book at least a week ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings. Mid-week is much quieter.
  • 🌊 East coast by scooter — the Suhua Highway and east coast are best explored by scooter, not bus. International driving licence required. The freedom to stop at cliff viewpoints and hidden coves makes all the difference.
  • 🌕 Best time for Sun Moon Lake — Mid-Autumn Festival draws large crowds for the moon celebration on the lake. Beautiful but very busy. Go the week after when weather is still perfect and crowds have gone.
  • 🎋 Tea as romance — a proper Taiwanese gongfu tea ceremony in a hillside teahouse is one of the slowest, most intimate things you can do together. No wifi, no rush, no distractions. Just tea, view, and each other.
