City Break China
Your complete guide to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an and Chinese urban culture
You're standing in the Forbidden City. 900 buildings. 180 acres. 500 years of emperors ruled from here. The scale is incomprehensible.
Later you're at the Bund in Shanghai. Art deco buildings on one side. Futuristic Pudong skyscrapers across the river. Past and future collide. This is urban China.
Chinese cities deliver extremes—Beijing's imperial history, Shanghai's modernity, Xi'an's ancient walls, Chengdu's laid-back vibe. Bullet trains connect them in hours. Metro systems rival the world's best. English signage improving but still challenging.
Beijing—imperial capital of dynasties and power
Beijing is command central. The Forbidden City dominates—900 buildings, emperors for 500 years. Arrive at opening (8:30am) to beat crowds. Audio guide essential.
Tiananmen Square stretches massive and politically charged. Temple of Heaven sits in a park where elderly practice tai chi at dawn—participatory, not just tourist viewing.
The new Beijing Central Axis UNESCO sightseeing bus connects key imperial sites—Temple of Heaven, Forbidden City, Drum and Bell Towers. Efficient for covering major monuments.
Hutong alleys reveal old Beijing—narrow lanes, courtyard houses, street vendors. Nanluoguxiang is touristy. Explore side hutongs near Houhai Lake for authentic atmosphere.
Great Wall day trip essential—Mutianyu (restored, cable car, fewer crowds) or Jiankou (wild, dramatic, serious hikers only). Plan full day.
Shanghai—where China goes cosmopolitan and modern
Shanghai is China's future. The Bund's 1920s art deco buildings face Pudong's absurd skyscrapers across Huangpu River. Evening skyline lights up—dramatic, photogenic.
French Concession retains tree-lined streets, cafes, boutiques, art galleries. Former European colonial area now Shanghai's hip neighborhood. Best for wandering.
Yu Garden in old town delivers classical Chinese gardens—koi ponds, pavilions, curved bridges. Exit into Yuyuan Bazaar's tourist chaos—dumplings, souvenirs, crowds.
Shanghai Tower (632m, 2nd tallest globally) observation deck offers city views. Expensive (180 RMB) but clear-day vistas worth it.
Maglev train from airport hits 430 km/h—8 minutes to city. Shanghai metro extensive, English signage, cheap (3-10 RMB). Easy city to navigate.
Xi'an—Terracotta Warriors and ancient Silk Road gateway
Xi'an gave China its name—ancient capital of 13 dynasties. The Terracotta Army sits 40km out—8,000 warriors, each face unique, 2,200 years old. Half-day minimum.
City wall (Ming Dynasty, 14km circumference) is intact and bikeable—rent bike, cycle ramparts, views over old and new Xi'an. 2-3 hours, best late afternoon.
Muslim Quarter delivers street food chaos—hand-pulled noodles, lamb skewers, roujiamo (Chinese burger), pomegranate juice. Evening crowds intense but worth it.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Tang Dynasty, Buddhist site) anchors southern city. Musical fountain show (evening, free) brings crowds and lights.
Xi'an is more manageable than Beijing/Shanghai—smaller, easier to navigate, authentic local vibe. Good entry-level Chinese city.
Chengdu—pandas, hotpot, and laid-back Sichuan life
Chengdu is China's most relaxed major city—teahouses, parks, locals playing mahjong. "The land of abundance" (fertile basin) means good food, easy living.
Giant Panda Breeding Center is the main draw—arrive at 8am for active pandas eating bamboo. After 10am they sleep. Weekends packed with Chinese tourists.
Sichuan hotpot defines Chengdu dining—mala (numbing spicy) broth, cook-your-own ingredients. Try "yuanyang" (half-half pot) if full spice intimidates you.
Jinli Ancient Street offers touristy snack street experience—spicy rabbit heads, skewers, face-changing opera performances. Weekday evenings less crowded.
Chengdu Sichuan Opera at Shu Feng Ya Yun Theatre—face changing, fire breathing, comedy. Touristy but well-done. Book ahead for good seats.
