Ski & Winter Slovakia

Your complete guide to Jasná resort, High Tatras skiing, and Slovak winter adventures

You're on Chopok summit (2,024m) at Jasná resort. Below, 49km of groomed runs drop through Low Tatras forests. The lift pass cost €26 (pre-booked online). Austria charges double for similar terrain.

Slovakia delivers serious alpine skiing at Central European prices. Jasná is Slovakia's largest—modern lifts, snow-making, terrain parks, après-ski. High Tatras resorts (Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso) offer smaller but scenic skiing below 2,600m peaks. Season runs December-April. Peak pricing €79/day walk-up, €26-40 booked ahead.

Special 2026: Olympic Festival at Jasná (Feb 12-15) during Milan Cortina Winter Olympics—free entry, try seven winter sports, meet Olympians.

Jasná—Slovakia's premier ski resort

Jasná sits in the Low Tatras on Chopok mountain (2,024m). Slovakia's biggest and best resort—49km of runs, 30 lifts, modern infrastructure, reliable snow.

Lift pass pricing dynamic: €26-40 online advance booking, €79 peak-season walk-up. Book ahead at gopass.travel for best rates. Season pass €669 adults, €543 seniors/juniors.

Two sides: North (Biela Púť) and South (Chopok Juh). Both connect at summit. North side has easier terrain, South has steeper runs and terrain parks.

Snowboarding well-developed—multiple terrain parks, halfpipe, dedicated boarder areas. Slovakia's fastest-growing winter sport.

Village (Demänovská Dolina) offers hotels, apartments, restaurants, nightlife. Modern resort feel, less traditional than Austrian alternatives but half the price.

Olympic Festival 2026—try winter sports free

Jasná hosts Olympic Festival February 12-15, 2026 during Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Free entry. Special event for Slovakia.

Activities: try skiing, snowboarding, cross-country, ice hockey, ski mountaineering, biathlon, snow volleyball. Equipment provided. Instructors available.

Live Olympic broadcasts from Milan Cortina on big screens. Watch Slovak athletes compete while at resort.

Meet Slovak Olympians—autograph sessions, Q&A, photo opportunities. Concerts, kids' activities, "Olympic passports" for children.

Normal skiing continues—festival adds extra activities, doesn't replace regular resort operations. Good time to visit if interested in winter sports beyond just skiing.

High Tatras skiing—scenic alpine terrain

Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso offer smaller but more scenic skiing below High Tatras peaks (up to 2,600m backdrop).

Tatranská Lomnica has cable car to Lomnický štít (2,634m) for sightseeing, plus ski slopes at lower elevations. Less extensive than Jasná but beautiful setting.

Štrbské Pleso sits at 1,346m around alpine lake. Small ski area, mainly beginner/intermediate. Cross-country skiing more popular here—kilometers of groomed trails.

High Tatras resorts less developed than Jasná—fewer lifts, shorter seasons, older infrastructure. But unbeatable mountain scenery and uncrowded slopes.

Combine skiing with Tatras hiking, cable cars, mountain hut visits. More mountain adventure, less pure ski resort experience.

Winter sports beyond skiing

Ice skating available at approximately 30 indoor ice stadiums across Slovakia, open to public during winter. Plus open-air rinks in cities and towns.

Cross-country skiing (bežecké lyžovanie) popular—Slovaks prefer Nordic skiing to downhill. Trails throughout Tatras, Low Tatras, national parks.

Snowshoeing opens winter mountains to non-skiers. Rentals available at resorts. Guided tours combine snowshoeing with wildlife watching.

Ice climbing on frozen waterfalls—Slovak Paradise, High Tatras. Guided courses available. January-February best. Advanced skill required.

Snow hotels and igloos—some resorts offer overnight in ice structures. Novelty experience, not as developed as Finnish equivalents.
