🍷 San Marino Wine & Drinks Guide

From Brugneto's hillside Sangiovese to grappa aged in French oak — the smallest republic in the world takes its drink seriously.

You drive up the switchbacks from the Rimini plain, the tower of Guaita growing taller with every hairpin, and by the time you reach the city gate the view behind you has opened out over fifty kilometres of Emilia-Romagna. San Marino is tiny — sixty square kilometres perched on Mount Titano, entirely surrounded by Italy — and yet it has been growing wine here since the Romans planted Sangiovese on these slopes. That tradition never stopped.

The name to know is Cantina San Marino — the Consorzio Vini San Marino, founded in 1979, which bottles every wine, grappa and liqueur produced within the republic. Every bottle is a local product, traceable to specific vineyards on these hills. The flagship Brugneto is a structured red from 100% Sangiovese, only produced in the best vintages. Alongside it: a golden late-harvest Moscato, a metodo classico sparkling wine, grappa aged a decade in French oak, and APE Bitter — the republic's own aperitivo.

This guide contains information about alcoholic beverages and is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their country.

🍇

Wine — Brugneto & the Vineyards of Mount Titano

San Marino's vineyards climb the slopes of Monte Titano on clay and limestone soils that have shaped the character of local wine for centuries. Sangiovese dominates — but the cantina's reserve wines and sparkling bottle show just how much ambition fits into sixty square kilometres.

Cantina di San Marino — Consorzio Vini San Marino

Founded in 1979 as a collective of San Marino's small growers, the cantina is the sole producer of wine within the republic. What could be a constraint has become a strength: every bottle is local, every vintage is an expression of the same hillside terroir, and the range — from a powerful Sangiovese reserve to a decade-aged grappa — is broader and more serious than most visitors expect. The cellar is open for visits and direct purchase.

Flagship Red

Brugneto di San Marino

Cantina San Marino · Monte Titano

San Marino's most celebrated wine and the only Identification of Origin (IO) red produced within the republic. Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes harvested in late September from the hillside vineyards of Monte Titano, Brugneto is deep ruby red with garnet reflections, showing blackberry, blueberry and cherry on the nose with spiced vanilla from twelve months in French oak. The finish is structured, with sweet tannins and precise acidity. Only 40,000 bottles are produced, and only in the best vintages — a genuine expression of this small republic's best growing conditions. Serve at 16–18°C with aged cheeses, cured meats or roasted lamb.

Rare Dessert Wine

Oro dei Goti

Cantina San Marino · Reserve Line

Named for the treasure trove attributed to the ancient Goths who sheltered on Monte Titano between the 5th and 7th centuries, Oro dei Goti is a rare amber-golden dessert wine made from 100% late-harvest Moscato, picked in October and November when the autumn sun has concentrated the sugar to extraordinary levels. Partial fermentation in French oak gives structure; twelve months of ageing brings honeyed richness rounded by acacia blossom, exotic fruit and a trace of almond and cinnamon. At 14.5% alcohol with only 2,000 bottles per vintage, this is San Marino's most collectible wine. Serve cold, at 10–12°C, with blue cheese, foie gras or a simple bowl of dried apricots.

Metodo Classico

Creta — Metodo Classico

Cantina San Marino · Reserve Line

San Marino's finest sparkling wine, named for the clay (creta) and limestone soils that give the grapes their structure and longevity. Made from 70% Pinot Nero and 30% Chardonnay harvested early in August from the highest vineyards on Monte Titano, Creta is produced by the traditional method — secondary fermentation in bottle, aged on its own lees for a full three years before disgorgement. The result is a pale golden extra-brut with a fine, persistent perlage and a complex nose of wild strawberry, raspberry, white peach and biscuit. Only 2,000 bottles per vintage. An excellent pre-dinner wine or companion to fresh local pasta and seafood from the Adriatic coast forty minutes away.

Spirits & Aperitivi — Grappa, Bitter & Vermouth

Beyond wine, Cantina San Marino produces a grappa aged ten years in French oak from Brugneto pomace, a bitter aperitivo made from local botanicals, and a vermouth. Small quantities, high ambition.

From the Cantina

All spirits produced in San Marino originate at Cantina San Marino, which distills from its own wine pomace and botanicals gathered from the Monte Titano slopes. The grappa is considered among the most refined in the Emilia-Romagna region; the bitter is a newer project but has already built a following among visitors looking for a genuinely local aperitivo.

Aged 10 Years

Grappa di Brugneto

Cantina San Marino · Spirits & Oil

Distilled from the fermented pomace of Brugneto Sangiovese grapes using discontinuous distillation — the same method used in the finest Italian grappa houses — and aged ten years in French oak barrels. The result is a deeply complex spirit with a warm amber colour, notes of vanilla, dried fruit and spice from the long oak maturation, and the floral, cherry character of the original grape still present underneath. Presented in a wooden gift box with 0.5–0.7 litre bottles; a serious purchase for the serious traveller. Available directly from the cantina shop and at select retailers in San Marino's historic centre.

Local Aperitivo

APE Bitter & Vermouth

Cantina San Marino · Bitter & Vermouth

Two of San Marino's most distinctive products, produced in small batches at Cantina San Marino from local botanicals and base wine. APE Bitter is the republic's own aperitivo: amber-red, bittersweet, with citrus peel, alpine herbs and a clean, persistent finish. Serve over ice with a slice of orange as an Aperitivo APE, or mixed long with tonic water. The Vermouth uses the same botanical philosophy — aromatic, lightly sweet, designed to be drunk before eating rather than as a cocktail ingredient. Both are sold at the cantina and in bottles across the historic centre — a genuinely local alternative to the Italian bitter brands that dominate the bars below on the coast.

Coffee — Italian Tradition on a Mountaintop

San Marino runs on Italian espresso culture. Every bar in the historic centre serves a short, dense espresso that rivals anything on the Rimini coast below — and Caffè Titano, in the heart of the old town, has been the meeting place for visitors and locals alike for decades.

Caffè Titano

Piazzetta del Titano 4, San Marino Città

The unavoidable address in San Marino's old town — situated on the Piazzetta del Titano in one of the most atmospheric corners of the historic centre. Caffè Titano serves espresso, cappuccino and a full range of speciality coffees from early morning, alongside freshly baked brioches and pastries made in-house. At midday, the menu shifts to a changing lunch offer; in the afternoon, over 40 teas and 30 chocolate varieties anchor an afternoon break; at aperitivo hour, the terrace fills with visitors and locals for an APE Bitter or a glass of Brugneto. Open from 6am to 11:30pm every day — the longest hours of any café in the republic. Outdoor seating overlooks the medieval square; inside, the contemporary interior respects the old town's stone architecture.

💡 Good to Know

  • 🍇 Brugneto is only produced in the best vintages — if you see a bottle, buy it. It is not available every year and rarely appears outside San Marino's borders.
  • 🏷️ San Marino has no VAT on many goods, including wine and spirits. Prices at the cantina shop are noticeably lower than equivalent quality in Italy or the rest of Europe.
  • 🍊 APE Bitter is the most distinctively San Marinese drink you can order. Ask for an "Aperitivo APE" in any bar in the historic centre — served over ice with an orange slice, it tastes of the place.
  • ☕ Coffee in San Marino is Italian espresso culture, undiluted. Order a caffè for a short espresso, cappuccino before noon only (Italians never drink it after), and macchiato if you want something in between.
  • 🍷 Oro dei Goti pairs exceptionally well with San Marino's local Fossa cheese — a semi-hard aged cheese matured in underground pits, available in the food shops of the historic centre.
  • 📍 The cantina is located outside the city walls, a short drive below the old town. If you are arriving by car, visit the cantina first — the uphill walk with bottles is not the ideal end to a tasting.
