Beach & Sun Morocco
Your complete guide to Morocco's Atlantic coast, surfing, and beach towns
Wind hits your face, board under arm. Taghazout's Anchor Point glimmers turquoise below. Surfers paddle out. This isn't Mediterranean calm—it's Atlantic power.
Morocco's 2,200km Atlantic coastline offers wild beaches, surf culture, wind-battered fishing towns. Forget tropical warmth—water stays 16-22°C year-round. Agadir gives resort-style sun, Essaouira brings wind and kite-surfing, Taghazout is surf mecca. Mediterranean side (Saïdia) warmer but less dramatic.
Best beach season: April-October for warmth, Sept-Nov for surf and fewer crowds. Winter (Dec-Feb) surfable but cold. Summer (July-Aug) crowded Agadir, perfect elsewhere.
Agadir—resort beach capital
Agadir has 10km golden sand beach, daily swept and patrolled. Morocco's original beach resort—rebuilt after 1960 earthquake, purpose-built for tourism.
Hotels line beachfront—international chains, all-inclusive resorts, beach clubs. Resorts €80-200/night. Beach free, clean, family-friendly.
Water temperature 18-22°C (coolest Jan-March, warmest Aug-Sept). Sunbathing comfortable March-Oct. Swimming year-round for brave souls.
Beach activities: camel rides (50 MAD), beach soccer, volleyball, parasailing. Promenade has cafes, restaurants, palm trees. Relaxed Mediterranean-style vibe.
Agadir is Morocco's easiest beach destination—safe, clean, English-speaking, tourist infrastructure. Not authentic Morocco but comfortable sun holiday.
Taghazout—surf village mecca
Taghazout transformed from fishing village to global surf destination. 15km north of Agadir—backpacker surf hub, yoga retreats, international nomads.
Famous surf breaks: Anchor Point (world-class right point), Killers, Boilers, Panoramas. Oct-March best swell. April-Sept smaller waves, learning-friendly.
Surf camps dominate—week packages €300-600 include accommodation, lessons, meals. Surf Berbere, Morocco Surf Adventures, dozens more. Surf schools everywhere.
Rentals: surfboards 100-150 MAD/day, wetsuits 50-80 MAD/day. Water cold year-round (16-20°C)—wetsuit essential always.
Taghazout gentrifying rapidly—new resorts, fancy cafes, rising prices. Visit soon before complete transformation. Still maintains chill surf vibe mornings/evenings.
Essaouira—wind city
Essaouira nicknamed "Wind City of Africa"—constant Atlantic wind makes sunbathing uncomfortable but creates perfect kitesurfing/windsurfing conditions.
Wide sandy beach stretches for kilometers. April-Nov best wind season. Winter calmer. Beach walk beautiful, laying out towel frustrating (wind blows sand everywhere).
Kitesurfing schools line beach—Explora, ION CLUB, Oceanique. Lessons €40-60 for 2 hours. Equipment rental €30-40/hour. Steady wind = quick learning.
Fortified medina (UNESCO) provides cultural balance to beach time—Portuguese architecture, art galleries, seafood restaurants. Stay medina riads €80-150/night.
Essaouira better as cultural-beach combo than pure beach destination. Wind factor real. Kite-surfers love it, sunbathers struggle.
Hidden beaches and Mediterranean side
Legzira Beach (south of Agadir) features dramatic red sandstone arches, remote beauty. One arch remains (another collapsed 2016). Paragliding spot. No facilities—bring supplies.
Sidi Ifni retains Spanish colonial architecture, quiet beach, local vibe. Minimal tourism, authentic. Beach decent for relaxation, not stunning.
Asilah (north, near Tangier) has small beaches, art murals, relaxed pace. Mediterranean waters warmer. Summer crowded with Moroccan tourists.
Saïdia (far north Mediterranean coast) is Morocco's warmest beach water—up to 26°C summer. New resort development. Popular with Algerian/Moroccan tourists.
Mediterranean side calmer seas, warmer water, less dramatic scenery. Atlantic side bigger waves, surf culture, windier, more dramatic coast.
