Monaco isn't a beach destination—it has ONE public beach (Larvotto) plus four private beach clubs. But what's here is quintessential Riviera: crystal-clear water (pebbles keep it clean), palm-lined promenade, superyacht views, water sports, exclusive clubs. It's not Malibu or Thailand beaches. It's Monaco beaches—small, polished, expensive, luxurious.

Best beach timing: June-September for warm water (22-26°C), full beach club services, peak sun. May and October shoulder season—water cooler (19-21°C) but pleasant, fewer crowds. April too cold for most (16-18°C). Winter swimming requires wetsuit. Avoid Grand Prix week May (chaos).

Larvotto Beach experience

Larvotto is Monaco's only public beach. Avenue Princesse Grace location. Pebbled (not sand) which keeps water exceptionally clear. Free access. Promenade with palm trees, cafés, ice cream (Mullot parlor).

Beach divided into sections: public pebble areas (free, bring towel), "Handiplage" (accessible area for disabilities with assistance staff), four private beach clubs (paid entry €30-80, includes sunbed/parasol/service).

Private beach clubs at Larvotto: La Rose des Vents, Le Neptune, La Note Bleue, Le Miami. €30-80 day entry depending on season/location. Sunbeds, parasols, showers, restaurants. La Note Bleue features live jazz evenings summer.

Water crystal-clear thanks to pebbles. Swimming excellent. Entry gradual. Snorkeling worthwhile—Larvotto Nature Reserve has protected marine ecosystem, flippers and mask reveal reef fish.

Beach maintenance happens April-May (reprofiling from winter). Parts temporarily closed during work but restaurants/shops remain open. Water quality monitored constantly. Monaco cleanliness standards extreme.

Exclusive beach clubs

Monte-Carlo Beach Club is the ultimate. Legendary since 1928. Olympic-sized heated seawater pool (Art Deco design), private beach with pontoon, cabanas. Exclusively for Monte-Carlo Beach hotel guests or Hôtel de Paris/Hermitage guests. Not publicly accessible.

Four restaurants on-site: Le Deck, Jondal at La Vigie, Elsa (1 Michelin star), Maona. Padel courts, gym, water sports (parasailing, tubing, boating). Kids Club 4-12 years. Opens mid-April through September.

Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel beach: accessible to Bay Hotel guests. Blue Bay lagoon (sandy-bottom pool), Mediterranean access. Less exclusive than Monte-Carlo Beach Club but still luxury level.

Larvotto private clubs (mentioned above) more accessible—day passes sold to public, no hotel stay required. €30-80 entry. Quality high, exclusivity lower than Monte-Carlo Beach Club.

French border beaches (Roquebrune, Cap-d'Ail) 10-minute walk offer similar quality, normal pricing. Beaches bigger, water same Mediterranean. Consider staying France, visiting Monaco. Saves significant money.

Water sports and activities

Jet ski rentals available at Larvotto Beach. €80-150 per 30-minute session. Coastal cruises, high-speed runs. License sometimes required (check operator).

Paddleboarding (SUP) popular. Rentals €20-30/hour at beach clubs. Calm morning Mediterranean perfect for beginners. Views of Monaco skyline from water memorable.

Kayaking offered at beach clubs. Single/double kayaks €15-25/hour. Explore coastline, visit nearby coves, gentle workout. Clear water shows underwater terrain.

Scuba diving requires permit in Monaco—obtain through official channels. CESMM and Monegasque Marine Academy offer diving services. Mediterranean diving reveals wrecks, reefs, marine life. Book ahead, bring certification.

Snorkeling easiest water activity. Larvotto Nature Reserve perfect spot. Bring own mask/flippers (€15-30 purchase at Monaco shops) or rent from clubs (€10-15). Early morning clearest water, fewer swimmers.

Budget beach alternatives

Public Larvotto areas free. Bring towel, umbrella, snacks. Pebbles uncomfortable—beach mat recommended (€5-10 purchase). Water quality identical to private clubs. Atmosphere less luxurious but authentic.

Walk to France beaches: Plage du Soleil (Roquebrune), Plage Marquet (Cap-d'Ail). 10-15 minute walk from Monaco. Same Mediterranean, bigger beaches, €10-20 sunbed rental vs Monaco €30-80.

Mullot ice cream parlor at Larvotto offers quality gelato €4-7. Better than overpriced beach club desserts. Sit on promenade benches, enjoy sea views, save money.

Picnic on beach possible (public areas). Buy food at Carrefour (Fontvieille) or Marché de la Condamine. Wine, cheese, baguette. Monaco beach experience without Monaco prices.

Sunset viewing free and magical. Larvotto faces east so sunrise spectacular (6-7am summer). Sunset better viewed from Monaco-Ville ramparts (free) or Port Hercule waterfront.
