Mountains India
Your complete guide to India's Himalayas, hill stations, and mountain experiences
Thin air. Your lungs work harder. Ahead, snow-capped peaks stretch across the horizon—Ladakh's high-altitude desert meets Himalayan giants.
India holds the Himalayas—world's highest range, spanning Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim. From 3,500m Leh to 8,000m+ Kanchenjunga views. Buddhist monasteries at 4,000m. Mountain passes at 5,600m. Trekking, mountaineering, monastery-hopping.
Access ranges from comfortable (Shimla, Manali hill stations) to extreme (Ladakh, Spiti high-altitude deserts). Costs ₹500 budget guesthouses to ₹15,000 luxury resorts. Altitude sickness affects everyone—acclimatize slowly.
June-Sept optimal. Winter closes roads, extreme cold. Monsoon avoids Ladakh (rain-shadow) but hits Himachal.
Ladakh—Roof of India
Ladakh = high-altitude desert (3,500m+), Tibetan Buddhist culture, barren mountains, turquoise lakes, extreme remoteness. Called "Land of High Passes"—multiple 5,000m+ roads.
Leh (capital, 3,500m)—acclimatization base. Spend 2-3 days before activities. Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, local markets. Guesthouses ₹600-2,000, hotels ₹2,500-8,000. Altitude sickness common—hydrate, rest, no alcohol.
Pangong Lake (4,350m)—stunning turquoise lake, 134km long, extends into Tibet. Day trip from Leh (₹2,500-4,000 jeep hire with driver) or overnight camping. 3 Idiots movie famously filmed here. Now touristy but still beautiful.
Nubra Valley (3,200m)—sand dunes with Bactrian camels, Diskit Monastery, hot springs. Cross Khardung La pass (5,359m, world's highest motorable). 2-day trips ₹5,000-10,000. Homestays/camps available.
Best time: June-Sept (roads open, weather stable). Winter -20°C to -30°C, most areas inaccessible. Manali-Leh highway open June-Oct only. Book accommodation ahead—limited options, high demand.
Himachal Hill Stations—Colonial Escapes
Himachal Pradesh = mountain state. British-era hill stations, apple orchards, pine forests, accessible Himalayan views. Summer escape from plains' heat.
Shimla—colonial capital, Mall Road shopping, toy train (UNESCO, ₹400-800, Kalka-Shimla scenic). Tourist-heavy but charming. Hotels ₹1,500-5,000. Base for nearby trails. Over-developed but convenient.
Manali—adventure hub. Solang Valley (skiing Dec-Feb, paragliding, zorbing), Old Manali (hippie cafes, guesthouses ₹500-1,500), Rohtang Pass excursions (₹500 permit, May-Nov only). Gateway to Spiti Valley, Ladakh.
Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj—Tibetan exile community, Dalai Lama residence, Buddhist monasteries, mountain views. Triund trek (overnight, ₹500-1,000). Peaceful, spiritual, cool climate. Guesthouses ₹600-2,000.
Kasauli—quiet hill town, pine forests, colonial architecture, sunset viewpoints. Less touristy than Shimla. Good for calm mountain escape. Hotels ₹2,000-6,000.
Uttarakhand—Himalayan Heart
Uttarakhand = "Land of Gods"—pilgrimage sites, trekking routes, Ganges source, yoga capital (Rishikesh). More spiritual than Himachal, less remote than Ladakh.
Rishikesh (earlier covered in mindful section)—also mountain gateway. Ganges flows from Himalayas here. Mountain backdrop, rafting, trekking starting point. Gateway to Char Dham pilgrimage.
Valley of Flowers (UNESCO)—alpine valley, rare flowers, July-August bloom. Trek 6 days from Joshimath. ₹10,000-18,000 with guide/porter. Moderate difficulty. Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage nearby.
Nainital—lake hill station, colonial charm, boating, viewpoints. Less spiritual than Rishikesh, more romantic. Hotels ₹1,500-6,000. Weekend escape from Delhi (300km, 6-7hrs drive).
Auli—skiing destination (Dec-March), chair lift ride (₹1,000), views of Nanda Devi peak (7,816m). Limited infrastructure vs European ski resorts. Equipment rental ₹1,500-3,000/day. Better for experience than expert skiing.
Sikkim—Hidden Himalayan Gem
Sikkim = India's second-smallest state, wedged between Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet. Kanchenjunga (8,586m, world's third-highest) dominates skyline. Permit required (free, easy).
Gangtok (capital, 1,650m)—base for exploration. MG Marg pedestrian street, monasteries nearby, Tsomgo Lake (3,753m) day trip. Hotels ₹1,000-5,000. Food scene momo-focused (Tibetan dumplings).
Pelling—Kanchenjunga views, Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse ruins. Quieter than Gangtok. Sunrise Kanchenjunga views from hotel balconies magical. Budget ₹800-3,000/night.
Yuksom—trekking base. Dzongri/Goecha La treks (7-10 days, ₹15,000-25,000 with guide/porter). Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Moderate-difficult. April-May and Oct-Nov best.
North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen) requires special permits—Yumthang Valley flowers (April-May), Gurudongmar Lake (5,183m, frozen), Zero Point snow. 3-4 day packages ₹8,000-15,000. Organized tours mandatory.

- 📅 Ladakh/Spiti June-Sept ONLY—roads snow-blocked rest of year. Book flights/accommodation months ahead. Peak July-Aug expensive, crowded. June/Sept quieter, cheaper
- 🧊 Mountain weather unpredictable—bring layers even summer. Leh 25°C day / 5°C night common. Passes can see snow any time. Proper gear non-negotiable
- 🚗 Manali-Leh highway = adventure itself—2 days, 10 hours driving, multiple 5,000m+ passes. Jeep hire ₹12,000-18,000. Fly if short on time (₹5,000-8,000)
- 💊 Carry altitude sickness meds, headache pills, stomach meds. Medical facilities limited in mountains. Travel insurance essential. Evacuation from Ladakh expensive if serious illness
