✈️ How to Get There

Getting to and around Haiti

✈️ Flying to Haiti

Main airports

Toussaint Louverture International (PAP) — Port-au-Prince. The main gateway for international flights. Most visitors land here; onward domestic hops and road transfers to the north or south usually start from the capital region.

Cap-Haïtien International (CAP) — Serves the north, including the Citadelle and Sans-Souci corridor. Useful if your itinerary is focused on Cap-Haïtien and you can find a suitable connection; schedules are thinner than PAP.

Typical connections (verify current routes):

  • United States: Carriers such as American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit often serve Haiti from hubs like Miami and Fort Lauderdale; New York area flights appear seasonally.
  • Caribbean & Europe: Air Caraïbes and other regional airlines link Haiti with neighbouring islands and onward European connections via Pointe-à-Pitre or Santo Domingo.

💡 Booking tip

Flight schedules change frequently. Compare Miami/Fort Lauderdale and Santo Domingo as entry points, and allow buffer time if you self-connect. Travel insurance that covers disruption is worth considering.

🚌 From the airport

Port-au-Prince (PAP)

Arrange a hotel or guesthouse pickup when possible — it is the most straightforward first arrival option. Pre-paid or trusted drivers reduce hassle after a long flight.

Official taxis and hotel shuttles operate from the terminal; agree the fare in advance (or confirm the hotel rate). Avoid unsolicited offers from the crowd outside; walk to the official rank or your pre-booked driver.

Cap-Haïtien (CAP)

Smaller airport, shorter walks to transport. Same rules: pre-arranged pickup where possible, agreed price for taxis.

🛂 Land borders & Dominican Republic

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Overland entry is possible at crossings such as Dajabón / Ouanaminthe (north) and Jimani / Malpasse (south). Buses, shared taxis, and informal transport connect border towns; formalities and waiting times vary.

If you are combining both countries, check visa and fee rules for each side and keep stamps and receipts organised.

🛂 Visa & entry

Rules depend on your nationality. Many Western passport holders can enter Haiti for tourism for a limited period without a visa in advance, but fees, permitted stay, and required documents change — confirm with your foreign ministry and the nearest Haitian embassy or consulate before you book.

🚗 Getting around

Road & local transport

Outside resort-style bubbles, transport is often a mix of tap taps (shared pickups), motorcycles, and private drivers. Roads can be rough; night driving outside secure routes is generally discouraged.

Domestic flights

Short internal flights (for example PAP–Cap-Haïtien) exist on small carriers; schedules and baggage rules vary. Book through the airline or a reputable local agent and reconfirm close to departure.

🚕 Practical note

Use your accommodation to book trusted drivers for day trips and airport runs. Carry small bills in Haitian gourdes (HTG) for local purchases; confirm whether your driver accepts US dollars.
