Your complete toolkit for Guatemala travel

Save time, money, and stress in Guatemala

Download these before you go. Guatemala-specific apps plus essential travel tools for every trip.

🇬🇹 Guatemala-Specific Apps (Download These First!)

Uber Guatemala

Essential

Uber operates in Guatemala City and around Antigua. Safer and more transparent than street taxis — fixed price, driver identified, route tracked. Essential for Guatemala City transport; useful for Antigua to airport runs. Download before arrival.

💡 Use for all Guatemala City transport — do not flag street taxis in the capital

Open Uber Guatemala

Maps.me (Offline Maps)

Essential

Download Guatemala maps before departure — mobile signal is unreliable in the Ixil Triangle, Cuchumatanes, and parts of the Petén. Maps.me works fully offline for navigation on mountain roads and in remote highland villages where Google Maps fails.

💡 Download the Guatemala map on wifi before leaving Antigua or Guatemala City

Get Maps.me

WhatsApp

Essential

The primary communication platform in Guatemala — hostels, tour operators, shuttle companies, guesthouses, and local guides all use WhatsApp for bookings and communication. You will need this for almost every arrangement you make in the country.

💡 Share your number when booking anything — Guatemalan businesses text through WhatsApp exclusively

Download WhatsApp

TAG Airlines App

Recommended

Guatemala's main domestic airline, connecting Guatemala City to Flores (Tikal gateway) in 1 hour. Flying to Tikal instead of taking the 8-9 hour bus saves a full day. Check schedules and book via the app or website. Also covers Huehuetenango and Quetzaltenango routes.

💡 Book Guatemala City to Flores at least 2-3 weeks ahead for best prices

TAG Airlines

🚌 Transport & Navigation

Google Maps

Essential

Works well in Antigua, Guatemala City, Panajachel, and other connected areas. Download offline maps for Guatemala before departure. Note: coverage gets patchy in the Cuchumatanes, Ixil Triangle, and deep Petén. Supplement with Maps.me for offline areas.

Google Maps

GetYourGuide

Recommended

Book volcano tours, Tikal trips, cooking classes, and cultural experiences in Guatemala. Vetted operators, clear cancellation policies, and customer support. Particularly useful for booking Acatenango overnight hikes and Tikal sunrise tours in advance during peak season.

GetYourGuide Guatemala

💰 Money & Payments

Wise (TransferWise)

Recommended

Multi-currency card with real exchange rates and low fees. Works at Guatemalan ATMs (Banrural, Banco Industrial, G&T Continental). No foreign transaction fees. Best option for managing quetzales across the trip. Set up before leaving home.

Get Wise card

XE Currency

Recommended

Real-time USD to GTQ (quetzal) conversion. Essential for comparing prices, negotiating fair market prices, and understanding budget costs. The exchange rate is approximately Q7.7 per dollar but fluctuates slightly — always check before converting cash.

XE Currency

🏥 Safety, Health & Travel

iOverlander

Recommended

Crowd-sourced information on campsites, border crossings, accommodation, and road conditions for travellers in Guatemala and Central America. Particularly useful for road conditions in the Cuchumatanes and information on less-travelled border crossings.

iOverlander

World Nomads Travel Insurance

Recommended

Adventure travel insurance covering volcano hiking, white-water activities, and other high-risk activities common in Guatemala. Includes emergency evacuation coverage — important given the altitude and remoteness of some destinations (Semuc Champey, Ixil Triangle).

World Nomads

Google Translate

Essential

Spanish is essential in Guatemala — very little English spoken outside Antigua and the main tourist circuit. Download the Spanish offline pack before departure for use without data. Camera translation works well for menus and signs. Basic Spanish phrases go a very long way.

Google Translate

✈️ Flight Search & Booking

Google Flights

Best overall flight search. Price tracking, flexible dates, and the cleanest interface. Use the calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly into Guatemala City (GUA). Good for finding connecting routes via Mexico City, Miami, or Houston.

Open Google Flights

Skyscanner

"Everywhere" search shows you the cheapest destinations from your home airport. Great for whole-month search and finding deals on international routes to Guatemala. Compare with Google Flights for best results.

Open Skyscanner

Hopper

Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Set alerts and book at the perfect moment. Can save significantly on international flights to Central America. Particularly useful for advance planning of peak-season Guatemala trips (December–February).

Open Hopper

Kiwi.com

Best for complex multi-city routes. Useful if combining Guatemala with Belize, Mexico, or Costa Rica. Can combine airlines that don't normally work together — helpful for budget routing through Central America.

Open Kiwi.com
💡 PRO TIP: Compare, Then Book Direct

Use these apps to find the best prices and routes — but book directly on the airline's website.

Why? Third-party bookings can cause headaches with:

  • Customer service runaround
  • Difficult changes & cancellations
  • Lost perks and seat selection
  • Complicated refunds

The few dollars you might save isn't worth the hassle when things go wrong.

🛏️ Accommodation & Comfort

Open Booking.com

Airbnb

Rent apartments, houses, or unique stays. Good option for Antigua (colonial houses with courtyards) and longer stays in Guatemala. Also offers local experiences and cooking classes hosted by Guatemalans.

Open Airbnb

Hostelworld

Best platform for hostels. Guatemala has an excellent hostel scene — particularly in Antigua, Panajachel, San Pedro La Laguna, and Flores. Read reviews from actual backpackers for honest assessments of safety and facilities.

Open Hostelworld

Dayuse

Game-changer

Book hotel rooms just for the day to nap, shower, or recharge during layovers. Useful during long Guatemala City layovers at La Aurora Airport — far better than waiting at the terminal for hours.

Open Dayuse

🎒 On The Ground

Bounce

Store your luggage securely anywhere — cafes, hotels, shops. Useful in Antigua when checking out before your shuttle departs. Insured and secure. Much better than hauling a large pack around colonial cobblestone streets.

Open Bounce

PackPoint

Essential

Enter your destination, dates, and activities — it builds a packing list based on weather. Essential for Guatemala's microclimates: warm coast, cool highlands, humid jungle. Volcano hiking requires layers even in January; Petén is hot year-round.

Open PackPoint

TripAdvisor

Recent reviews help find authentic restaurants, avoid tourist traps, and check if a tour operator is reputable. Particularly useful in Antigua and Flores where many options exist. Filter by recent reviews to avoid outdated information.

Open TripAdvisor

Splitwise

Expense splitting for groups. Guatemala is excellent value but costs add up on group tours (Acatenango, Tikal). Track who paid for shuttles, meals, and accommodation from the start to avoid confusion at the end of the trip.

Open Splitwise

💡 App & Tech Tips for Guatemala

  • WiFi is patchy outside tourist hubs: Antigua, Guatemala City, and Panajachel have decent WiFi. Semuc Champey, Ixil Triangle, and deep Petén have limited or no connection — download everything offline before you leave town.
  • Buy a local SIM: Tigo and Claro are the main operators. A tourist SIM with data costs Q50–80 (~$6–10) and is available at the airport and most towns. Claro has better rural coverage; Tigo is stronger in cities.
  • Cash is king outside Antigua: Many guesthouses, markets, and shuttle services in rural areas are cash-only. ATMs (cajeros) exist in towns but run out on weekends — withdraw in Antigua or Panajachel before heading to remote areas.
  • Screenshot everything: Tour confirmations, hostel bookings, shuttle times. Mobile data drops to zero in Semuc Champey, parts of the Cuchumatanes, and some jungle lodges near Tikal.
  • Power banks essential: Long shuttle journeys (Antigua to Flores is 8–9 hours), volcano overnight camps, and remote lodges without reliable electricity all drain devices. Bring a charged power bank.
  • Guatemalan sockets: Type A/B (same as US/Canada). European plugs need an adapter. Voltage is 120V — same as North America, different from Europe.
