Adventure Grenada

Dive wrecks, tube rapids, tackle reefs, and explore Carriacou on Grenada's wildest itineraries

The Bianca C went down in 1961 — a 184-metre Italian luxury liner that caught fire in Grenada's harbour and settled on a slope that begins at 30 metres and continues into darkness. Caribbean divers call her the "Titanic of the Caribbean." She sits in warm, clear water with coral encrustation so complete she looks like a natural reef, schools of barracuda circling the superstructure, enormous sea turtles picking their way through the wreckage. She is one of the Caribbean's great dive sites.

But Grenada's adventure credentials go beyond the Bianca C. River tubing through rainforest gorges. 4x4 safari into the volcanic highlands. Carriacou's reefs and wrecks — largely undived, genuinely wild. The island has a concentrated, well-developed adventure offering that covers underwater, above water, and overland in a small geographical area.

For active travellers, Grenada offers a range of experiences rare in the Eastern Caribbean, with year-round warm water and a diving/outdoor infrastructure built around knowledgeable local operators.

Diving — the Bianca C and beyond

Grenada's dive sites divide into three main categories: the Bianca C and nearby wrecks, the Molinere reef system and sculpture park, and the largely untouched reefs and wrecks of Carriacou. Together they offer enough variety for a two-week dive holiday without repetition.

The Bianca C is the centrepiece — accessible to experienced open-water divers, with the shallowest section of the wreck at around 28 metres and the deepest extending to 48 metres. The ship's promenade deck, lifeboats, and funnel are all identifiable despite decades of coral growth. A single dive here typically costs US$50–65 with equipment, run by operators based in Grand Anse. Morning dives have the best visibility.

For certified divers wanting to explore multiple sites, a 2-tank dive covers both a wreck and a reef in a half-day — standard format for most Grenada dive operations. Water temperature runs 26–29°C year-round with visibility commonly 15–25 metres in calm conditions. Eco Dive and Aquanauts Grenada are the most established operators.

Carriacou offers a completely different diving environment — smaller boat operators, fewer divers per trip, and sites that include the Melanie wreck (a 60-metre tug at 20 metres) and extensive pristine reef systems that see a fraction of the traffic of the main island's dive sites. The clarity in Carriacou's waters, particularly around Sandy Island, is frequently described as the best in the Grenadines.

River tubing and the 4x4 highlands

River tubing on the Balthazar River has become one of Grenada's most popular adventure activities — floating downstream through gorges of tropical rainforest, steering around rocks, swimming in natural pools between the rapids. The river runs from the Grand Etang highlands down toward the east coast, through sections of genuine jungle where Mona monkeys occasionally appear on the riverbank.

Most half-day river tubing tours combine the Balthazar River with a stop at Annandale Falls — a 30-foot waterfall with a deep pool where local teenagers take running leaps from the cliff edge above. Watching the cliff diving while recovering from the river section is part of the experience. The tour usually includes rum punch at the end.

The 4x4 safari takes a different approach to the same highlands — a purpose-built off-road vehicle navigates the volcanic interior roads between Grand Etang, the waterfalls, and the northern coast. The tour visits Grand Etang Lake, drives through cocoa and banana plantations, and generally shows parts of Grenada's interior inaccessible by regular vehicle. Often combined with river tubing as a half or full-day adventure package.

The Carriacou day trip from St. George's is the most complete single adventure day available — ferry to Hillsborough, island tour including Belair National Park ruins, time at Paradise Beach for swimming, and the return crossing across the channel between the islands. The seas on the crossing can be lively — bring motion sickness medication if needed.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🐟 The Bianca C dive is for experienced open-water divers comfortable at 28–48m — if this exceeds your certification level, request a shallower wreck dive (the Hema or Veronica L) when booking the 2-tank dive
  • 🌊 River tubing is not suitable for those with back problems or during pregnancy — conditions on the Balthazar River change significantly after heavy rain. Check with your operator on the morning of your tour
  • 🏝️ The Carriacou day trip operates Monday and Friday only — book in advance as spaces fill during peak season. Bring snorkelling equipment from Grenada, as rental is not available on Carriacou
  • 🚙 The 4x4 Safari is best combined with river tubing as a full-day activity — doing both separately wastes transfer time. Ask specifically about the combined package when booking
  • 🤿 Carriacou diving requires an overnight stay for the best experience — the reefs around Sandy Island and around Petite Martinique are best explored over multiple days with a Carriacou-based dive operator
