Your complete guide to kitesurfing, diving, golf, and active pursuits
The kite catches wind. You rise, board cutting across the lagoon, Le Morne mountain framed against blue sky. For a moment you’re flying—then splash back into warm turquoise water, laughing. This is Mauritius sport.
The island punches above its weight for active travelers. World-class kitesurfing at Le Morne. Excellent diving with warm water year-round. Championship golf courses designed by legends. Trail running through volcanic terrain.
Water dominates—naturally. But the interior offers hiking, mountain biking, and trail running that surprises visitors expecting only beaches.
Trade winds blow May–November, perfect for kiting. Diving is year-round. Golf never stops. Whatever your sport, Mauritius delivers.
Kitesurfing—world-class conditions
Le Morne is the kitesurfing capital. Flat lagoon, steady trade winds, shallow water for learning. The One Eye spot draws professionals for wave riding. Beginners stay inside the reef.
Bel Ombre and Preskil offer alternative spots with similar conditions. Less crowded than Le Morne but equally good for learning.
Season runs May–November with trade winds blowing consistently. December–April sees variable winds—possible but less reliable.
Schools and rental shops line the Le Morne beach. IKO-certified instructors. Equipment rental by hour or day. Lessons from beginner to advanced.
Windsurfing shares the same spots. Belle Mare on the east coast adds another option with consistent winds and rental gear.
Diving—warm water wonders
Mauritius diving is warm and accessible. Water temperature 24–28°C year-round. Visibility typically 15–30 meters. No wetsuit required.
The north coast (Trou aux Biches, Grand Baie) has the most dive centers. Popular sites include shipwrecks, coral gardens, and underwater caves.
Blue Bay Marine Park in the south offers protected diving with exceptional coral diversity. The Speaker shipwreck off the east coast attracts experienced divers.
PADI and SSI certification courses are widely available. Complete Open Water in 3–4 days. Discover Scuba for non-certified swimmers.
Night diving, drift diving, and specialty courses available. The reef system around the entire island offers varied experiences.
Golf—championship courses
Mauritius has become a golf destination with courses designed by Bernhard Langer, Ernie Els, and Peter Matkovich. Resort courses rival any in the world.
Île aux Cerfs Golf Club is the showpiece—Bernhard Langer design, island setting, boat transfer from Trou d’Eau Douce. Spectacular and expensive.
Anahita Golf Course (Ernie Els design) sprawls along the east coast. Mountain and ocean views. Attached to luxury resort.
Tamarina Golf Estate offers mountain scenery on the west coast. More affordable than the flagship courses. Well-maintained.
Green fees range Rs 3,000–10,000 (€70–220). Resort guests often get discounts. Booking essential for premium courses.
Running & Fitness—staying active
Trail running in Black River Gorges offers challenging terrain. 50km+ of trails through native forest. Best in dry season (May–November).
Beach running works at low tide—Flic en Flac and Belle Mare have long, firm stretches. Early morning beats the heat.
Most luxury resorts have gyms and fitness facilities. Yoga sessions on the beach are common. Hotel activities often include group fitness.
Swimming is obvious—the lagoons are warm and calm. Serious swimmers can find pools at hotels or public facilities in Port Louis.
Road cycling is possible but traffic can be challenging. Mountain biking is better—Casela and Domaine de l’Étoile have dedicated trails.
