Trains
Limited but improving. High-speed trains: Istanbul to Ankara (4 hours), Ankara to Konya (2 hours). Comfortable and scenic. Book via TCDD website. Not as extensive as buses.
Dolmuş (Shared Minibuses)
Local transport everywhere in Turkey. Fixed routes, you hop on/off. Pay driver directly. Cheap (20-50 TL). Essential for coastal areas. No schedule - they leave when full.
💡 Pro Tip
For coastal routes (Fethiye to Olympos, etc.), take overnight buses to save on accommodation and maximize daytime for activities. Comfortable seats recline fully.
🛂 Visa Requirements
Most visitors can enter Turkey visa-free or with e-Visa:
- Visa-free (90 days): EU citizens, UK, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, Chile, others
- E-Visa required (apply online): USA, Canada, Australia, many others. Cost: $50-100 depending on nationality. Valid 90 days. Apply at evisa.gov.tr - takes 3 minutes.
- Visa on arrival: Some nationalities can get visa at airport
Always check current requirements for your nationality before travel. Requirements change.
💰 Money & Currency
Currency: Turkish Lira (TL or ₺). Currency has depreciated significantly - favorable for international visitors.
Exchange: Use ATMs for best rates. Avoid airport exchange counters (poor rates). Many places accept Euros, but lira is better value. Credit cards widely accepted in cities.
ATM Tips: QNB Finansbank, Garanti, İş Bankası have widespread ATMs. Withdraw in Turkish Lira, not your home currency (avoid dynamic currency conversion).
💡 Save Money
Turkey has become very affordable for international travelers due to currency depreciation. Budget $30-50/day for mid-range travel, including accommodation and food. Luxury is also surprisingly affordable.
🏥 Travel Insurance
Highly recommended for Turkey. Cover medical emergencies, theft, trip cancellations. Healthcare is good but not free for tourists. Popular insurers: SafetyWing, World Nomads, Heymondo.
