Main Airport

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) - Hungary's main international gateway, 16km southeast of Budapest city center. Named after the famous Hungarian composer. Modern, efficient, and well-connected to the city via bus, train, and taxi.

Terminals: Terminal 2 handles all commercial flights (divided into 2A and 2B). Terminal 1 is closed. Most low-cost airlines use 2B, traditional airlines use 2A.

🚌 From Budapest Airport to City Center

Bus 100E (Direct, Premium)

Fastest public transport option. Runs 24/7 direct to Deák Ferenc tér (city center). Journey time: 40 minutes. Ticket: 2,200 HUF (~€6). Runs every 6-7 minutes during rush hour, 10-15 minutes evenings, 30-40 minutes at night. Cannot use standard BKK passes.

Bus 200E + Metro (Budget Option)

Operates 4am-11pm. Connect at Kőbánya-Kispest Metro Station, then M3 metro to center. Journey time: 50-60 minutes total. Bus ticket: 530 HUF, or 700 HUF if bought on bus. Metro ticket: separate 370 HUF. Total: 900 HUF (~€2.40).

Train via Bus 200E

Take Bus 200E to Ferihegy Station (12 minutes), then train to Nyugati Station. Train journey: 22-25 minutes. Total: 35 minutes. Cost: 950 HUF total. Operates 9am-10pm daily.

Taxi

Official taxi service: FőTaxi. Fixed fares by zone: 5,000-10,000 HUF (€14-28). Journey time: 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Agree price before journey. Uber and Bolt also available with designated airport pickup zones.

Private Minibus

Door-to-door shared service: around 4,000 HUF (~€11) per person. Multiple stops but convenient for luggage.

🚂 Other Ways In

Train from Vienna—frequent trains between Vienna and Budapest (2.5-3 hours, around €20-60). Scenic Danube route. ÖBB and MÁV operate. Several daily departures. Comfortable option.

Train from Prague—direct trains Budapest-Prague (7 hours, around €30-80). Overnight sleeper available. RegioJet and Czech Railways. Book in advance for best prices.

Train from Zagreb—direct connection to Budapest (6-7 hours). Croatian and Hungarian railways. Several daily trains. Scenic countryside route.

Danube River Cruise—luxury cruise ships connect Vienna-Budapest (day trips or multi-day). Scenic but expensive. Popular April-October. Book months ahead.

Land borders: Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia. Road crossings open (except Ukraine due to current situation). EU Schengen rules apply for most borders.

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area and the European Union. US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other passport holders can enter visa-free for tourism up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

🚗 Getting Around Hungary

Trains (MÁV)

Hungary's train network connects major cities efficiently. Modern InterCity trains run between Budapest and Lake Balaton, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs. Book in advance for best prices at mavcsoport.hu

Buses (Long Distance)

Extensive bus network covering areas trains don't reach well. Main operator: Volánbusz. Essential for reaching smaller wine regions, countryside towns, some Balaton villages.

Domestic Flights

Limited domestic flights—Hungary is relatively small. Wizz Air operates some routes but train/bus usually more practical and cheaper for domestic travel.

🚋 Local Transportation in Budapest

BKK operates all public transport in Budapest (metro 4 lines, trams, buses, trolleybuses, suburban railway HÉV).

  • Single ticket: 450 HUF (~€1.20) valid 80 minutes with one transfer
  • Day ticket: 2,500 HUF (~€6.70) unlimited travel 24 hours
  • 3-day ticket: 5,500 HUF (~€14.70)
  • 7-day ticket: 6,300 HUF (~€16.90)

The metro (M1 yellow line is UNESCO heritage), trams (especially scenic tram 2 along Danube), and buses are clean, frequent, and easy to navigate. Most signage includes English.

🚙 Renting a Car

Recommended if you want to explore Hungarian countryside, wine regions (Tokaj, Eger, Villány), or Lake Balaton villages at your own pace.

Things to Know

  • Drive on the right side of the road
  • Vignette (highway sticker) mandatory for highways—buy at border, gas stations, or online
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h (cities), 90 km/h (rural roads), 110 km/h (expressways), 130 km/h (motorways)
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol—any detectable alcohol is illegal
  • Major rental companies available at airport and city center
  • Winter tires recommended December-March

⚠️ Vignette Required

Hungary requires a vignette (e-matrica) for highway use. Buy online at ematrica.hu or at border crossings. Fines are steep if caught without one. 10-day pass: 2,975 HUF (~€8).
