Beach & Sun Malta

Your complete guide to Malta's beaches, lagoons, and Mediterranean sunshine

The boat pulls into Blue Lagoon. The water is impossible—turquoise so vivid it looks Photoshopped. Other swimmers float in crystal clarity, anchored boats casting shadows on the sandy bottom 6 meters below.

Malta delivers 300+ days of sun annually and some of the Mediterranean's clearest waters. Rocky coastlines hide swimming spots carved by millennia of waves. Sandy beaches like Golden Bay offer classic sunbathing. And Comino's Blue Lagoon remains the island's undisputed jewel.

From beach clubs with infinity pools to natural limestone lidos where locals cliff-jump, Maltese beach culture blends Mediterranean ease with British practicality.

Peak season June-September. Water temperature hits 26°C in August.

Sandy Beaches—Malta's Best

Malta's beaches tend rocky, but a few golden sand stretches rival any Mediterranean destination. Golden Bay curves wide with orange-gold sand, gentle slope, family-friendly. Malta's most beautiful sandy beach.

Mellieħa Bay is Malta's largest—nearly 1km of white sand, shallow water, water sports everywhere. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, jet skiing. Reliable northeasterly breeze makes it ideal for wind sports.

Paradise Bay near Ċirkewwa is small, tucked between cliffs, crystal water. Access means stairs down (lots of them), which keeps crowds manageable. Views of Gozo and Comino islands.

Għajn Tuffieha Bay (Riviera) sits next to Golden Bay—steeper beach, fewer facilities, more natural feel. Walk down 180+ steps from parking. Worth it for quieter atmosphere.

All beaches Blue Flag certified—clean water, facilities, lifeguards in summer. June-September packed. May and October pleasant with fewer tourists.

Blue Lagoon—Comino's Crown Jewel

Blue Lagoon on tiny Comino island is Malta's #1 attraction. Natural pool with water so clear you see every rock on the bottom. Turquoise like tropical postcards but Mediterranean real.

Ferries leave Ċirkewwa (north Malta) every 30 minutes in summer. €15 return adults, 20-minute crossing. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm to avoid peak crowds—midday is packed.

Comino has no cars, no hotels (one), no crowds beyond Blue Lagoon. Walk 20 minutes inland—total silence, wild thyme, abandoned buildings. Crystal Lagoon nearby offers similar water, fewer people.

Snorkeling excellent—visibility 30+ meters. Bring your own gear or rent on-island. Caves along coast accessible by kayak or swimming (strong swimmers only).

Summer means hundreds of day-trippers. Winter (November-March) sees maybe 20 visitors—surreal to have it nearly empty. Water cold (16-18°C) but swimming possible.

Rocky Lidos—Swimming Like Locals

Most Maltese swimming spots aren't beaches—they're flat limestone slabs with ladders into deep water. Locals call these lidos.

St Peter's Pool near Marsaxlokk is natural perfection—horseshoe of rocks, crystal water, cliff jumping (3-6 meters). Flat slabs for sunbathing. No facilities means bring everything. Free access. Locals' favorite.

Ġnejna Bay offers red-sand beach plus rocky swimming areas. Less crowded than Golden Bay next door. Clay slopes (don't climb—dangerous) give unique landscape.

Wied il-Għasri on Gozo is narrow fjord-like inlet—swimmers between towering cliffs. Deep water, intense blue. Accessible by steep path. Spectacular but exposed to wind.

These spots lack facilities—no toilets, showers, shade. Bring water, snacks, umbrella. Arrive early for parking. Locals swim year-round (winter means wetsuits).

Beach Clubs—Luxury Lounging

Malta's beach clubs offer pools, restaurants, sunbeds, Instagram moments. Café del Mar in St Paul's Bay leads the scene—infinity pool, Mediterranean views, DJs, sunset parties.

Sunbed prices summer 2026: €25-45 depending on location/cushioning. VIP sofas €130. Food and drinks extra. Book online ahead—weekends sell out.

Riviera Resort at Għajn Tuffieha Bay offers beachfront lido, pool, restaurant. Entrance €18-25 includes facilities. Stunning Golden Bay views from terraces.

These clubs attract party crowds (20s-30s), Instagram influencers, yachters. Dress code smart-casual. Some host pool parties with guest DJs (Thursdays at Café del Mar).

Budget alternative: traditional Maltese beach clubs in Sliema/St Julian's (€15-20) offer pools, facilities, local vibe without luxury price tag.
