Main Airports
Ivato International Airport (TNR) — Madagascar's main gateway, 17km from Antananarivo city centre. Most international flights land here. The airport is functional but basic; allow extra time for immigration queues.

- Nosy Be Airport (NOS) — Fascene Airport, serving the main beach island. Direct charters from Europe operate during high season (July–October)
- Toliara Airport (TLE) — Southwest coast, for Ifaty and Anakao beach areas

💡 Insider Tip
Most visitors fly into Antananarivo (TNR). If your main goal is beaches, look for seasonal charter flights direct to Nosy Be — they are often cheaper than flying via Tana and taking a domestic connection.

From Europe
Air France flies Paris CDG–Antananarivo directly (approx. 11 hours). The most reliable route from western Europe. Corsair also operates seasonal flights from Paris.
From Africa & Middle East
Ethiopian Airlines connects via Addis Ababa from dozens of African and global cities. Kenya Airways connects via Nairobi. Turkish Airlines connects via Istanbul from Europe and beyond.

🎫 Booking Tip
Book flights 3–6 months ahead. Madagascar is not over-served by airlines and prices rise sharply during dry season (July–October). Ethiopian Airlines often offers the best value from the UK and other European cities.
🚖 From Ivato Airport to Antananarivo
Taxi
Official taxis are available at the exit. Journey time: 30–60 minutes depending on traffic (Tana traffic can be severe). Cost: approximately 30,000–50,000 MGA (around €7–12). Always agree the price before getting in.
Hotel Transfer
Most hotels in Antananarivo offer airport pickup for a fixed fee. Strongly recommended for first arrivals — confirm in advance. Often around €15–25 but hassle-free.
Private Driver
Hiring a private driver-guide through your tour operator is the norm for independent travel in Madagascar. They meet you at the airport and become your main transport solution throughout the trip. Standard arrangement for this type of destination.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
All nationalities require a visa for Madagascar. Most visitors can apply online in advance via the official e-visa portal, or obtain a visa on arrival at Ivato Airport. The tourist e-visa is single-entry, valid for up to 60 days.
Apply 1–6 months before travel. Processing takes up to 72 hours. Keep the electronic authorisation on your phone or printed for border control. Fees are the same as visa on arrival.

Domestic Flights (Madagascar Airlines)
Madagascar is large (587,000km²) and roads are rough. Domestic flights are the practical option for covering long distances. Madagascar Airlines connects Antananarivo with Nosy Be, Toliara, Toamasina, Mahajanga, and other regional airports. Book in advance — seats fill fast during high season.
Taxi-Brousse (Bush Taxi)
The Malagasy bus system: shared minibuses and 4x4s that depart when full from station-brousse (bus stations). Cheap — a long trip costs a few euros — but very slow, uncomfortable, and unpredictable. Part of the local experience, but not recommended for tight itineraries.
Rental Car (4x4 Only)
Outside Antananarivo, roads deteriorate rapidly. A 4x4 is essential for reaching national parks, Baobab Alley, or the west coast during rainy season. Many visitors hire a car with a local driver for flexibility and road knowledge. Compare options on international rental platforms before arrival.
🗺️ Planning Tip
Do not underestimate distances in Madagascar. What looks like 200km on a map can take 6–8 hours on unpaved roads. Build in buffer time and book domestic flights rather than overland for long stretches.
🚋 Getting Around Antananarivo
Antananarivo has no metro or tram. Transport is by taxi, private car, or on foot in the upper town.
Taxi
- Negotiate price before getting in — no meters in most taxis
- Short city journey: 5,000–15,000 MGA (approx. €1–3)
- Ask your hotel to call a trusted taxi driver — safer and often better rates
Walking is possible in the Haute-Ville (upper city) around the Rova area. The lower city around Analakely market is bustling but navigable on foot. Traffic can be severe during rush hours (7–9am and 4–7pm).
🚙 Renting a Car
Essential if you want to explore independently. Most roads outside the capital require a 4x4 — a standard car will get stuck or damaged on unpaved routes.

- Drive on the right side of the road
- International driving licence required
- Zebu cattle on roads — especially at dawn and dusk, drive slowly
- Fuel (petrol/diesel) available in towns but carry extra in remote areas
- Hiring a local driver with a car is often cheaper and safer than self-drive
⚠️ Road Conditions
Many roads are unpaved, unmarked, and prone to flooding during the rainy season (November–March). The RN7 south from Antananarivo is the best-maintained road in the country. Always check road conditions locally before departing.
