Buses (Most Common)
Extensive network covering all major routes. VIP buses (air-con, comfortable) and local buses (cheap, slow, frequent stops). Book through Baolau.com or at stations. Vientiane-Luang Prabang: 8-10 hours, $10-25. Vientiane-Vang Vieng: 4 hours.
Trains (New!)
Laos-China Railway connects Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, and Boten (China border). Fast, modern, comfortable. Much quicker than buses for north-south travel.
Domestic Flights
Lao Airlines operates domestic routes. Vientiane-Luang Prabang, Vientiane-Pakse. Small planes, limited schedules. Worth considering for long distances.
💡 Travel Tip
The new railway is the fastest way to travel north-south. Buses are cheaper but much slower. Slow boat is an experience, not efficient transport.
🛺 Local Transportation in Cities
Tuk-tuks are the main local transport. Always negotiate price before getting in. Short rides: 20,000-30,000 kip. Longer rides: 40,000-60,000 kip.

🚙 Renting a Car
Car rental possible but uncommon. Roads improving but still challenging in remote areas. Most travelers use buses, tuk-tuks, or hire driver with car.
Things to Know
- Drive on the right side of the road
- Roads range from excellent (new highways) to rough (rural areas)
- International driving permit required
- Insurance essential—roads can be unpredictable
- GPS often unreliable in remote areas
⚠️ Driver Recommendation
Consider hiring a car with driver instead of self-driving. Local drivers know conditions, speak Lao, and navigate safely. Often same cost as rental + fuel.
