✈️ How to Get There

Getting to and around Jamaica

✈️ Flying to Jamaica

Main Airports

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) — Montego Bay — Jamaica’s busiest airport and the main gateway for most international visitors. Located 5km east of Montego Bay, directly adjacent to the resort strip. Connects to North America (New York, Toronto, Miami, Atlanta), the UK (London Gatwick, Manchester), and Europe (Frankfurt, Zurich). American Airlines, Delta, United, British Airways, Air Canada, TUI, and Condor all serve MBJ.

Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) — Kingston — The capital’s airport, 19km southeast of downtown Kingston. Handles a smaller volume of international traffic—primarily flights from the US, Canada, and the Caribbean. Caribbean Airlines, American, and Delta serve KIN. Business travellers and those heading to Kingston or the Blue Mountains use this airport.

Other Airports:

  • Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) — Ocho Rios area, serves private and charter flights, some regional Caribbean services
  • Tinson Pen Aerodrome (KTP) — Kingston, domestic flights and air charters within Jamaica

💡 Insider Tip

Most European visitors fly into Montego Bay (MBJ) with TUI, Condor, or British Airways. Booking into MBJ gives direct access to the resort coast. Flying into Kingston (KIN) makes more sense if your trip centres on the capital, Blue Mountains, or Port Antonio.

🚌 From Sangster Airport (MBJ) to Hotels

Hotel Shuttle (Easiest)

Most all-inclusive and large resorts provide free or low-cost airport transfers. Confirm when booking—a representative will meet you in Arrivals with a sign.

Knutsford Express (Best Value Intercity)

Jamaica’s premium coach service runs scheduled departures from MBJ airport to Kingston, Ocho Rios, and other points. Air-conditioned, reliable, and significantly cheaper than private taxis for longer journeys. Kingston from MBJ costs around JMD 2,400 (~USD 15) and takes approximately 3.5 hours. Book ahead at knutsfordexpress.com.

JUTA Taxi

Jamaica Union of Travelers Association taxis are the official licensed airport taxis. Rates are set and displayed—USD 10–20 to most Montego Bay hotels, USD 25–40 to Negril, higher to Ocho Rios or Kingston. Confirm the fixed rate before getting in. More at mbjairport.com.

Rental Car

Multiple agencies operate 24/7 at MBJ arrivals. Rates start around USD 40/day. Note: Jamaica drives on the LEFT side of the road (British legacy). Roads outside major highways are narrow and winding.

🚌 From Norman Manley Airport (KIN) to Kingston

Norman Manley Airport sits on the Palisadoes Peninsula, 19km southeast of downtown Kingston—a 25–40 minute drive depending on traffic. See transfer options at normanmanleyinternationalairport.com.

JUTA Taxi: USD 20–30 to downtown Kingston, USD 30–40 to New Kingston hotels. Official taxis wait in the Ground Transportation Hall outside Arrivals.

Knutsford Express: Runs nine times daily between the airport and New Kingston (45 minutes, JMD 1,300 / ~USD 8). From New Kingston, connections to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are available.

JUTC Bus #98: Budget option. Runs approximately four times per hour to downtown Kingston (North Parade). JMD 80 (~USD 0.50). Takes about 45 minutes. The stop is in front of the terminal.

Uber: Available for drop-offs at the airport. Pickup is currently restricted to outside the terminal gates—check the app on arrival.

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Jamaica is visa-free for most Western passport holders. US citizens can stay up to 6 months without a visa. UK, Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand citizens: up to 90 days. Most EU countries: 30–90 days depending on nationality.

All arrivals must complete the C5 Passenger Declaration Form—available online up to 30 days before arrival at enterjamaica.gov.jm, or in paper form on the aircraft. Proof of return/onward travel and accommodation address required on entry.

If arriving from a yellow fever risk country, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required. Currency over USD 10,000 must be declared.

🚗 Getting Around Jamaica

Knutsford Express (Best Intercity Option)

Jamaica’s premium coach network is the best option for travel between major towns. Air-conditioned, punctual, and safe. Routes connect Montego Bay, Kingston, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and Negril. Book tickets online at knutsfordexpress.com. Sample fares: MBJ–Kingston JMD 2,400 (~USD 15), MBJ–Ocho Rios JMD 1,800 (~USD 11).

Route Taxis

Shared taxis running fixed routes between towns—the main local transport system used by Jamaicans. Very cheap (JMD 100–500 for most trips), but crowded and timings unpredictable. Require local knowledge to use confidently. Fine for short hops between known points.

Private Taxis and Charter

Widely available for airport transfers, day trips, and resort-to-resort transfers. Always agree a price before departure. Half-day rates for a private driver run USD 80–150 depending on distance. Most hotels can arrange trusted drivers.

🎯 Transport Tip

For getting between major towns, Knutsford Express is the clear winner for independent travellers: fixed prices, reliable schedules, air conditioning, and luggage space. Book ahead during high season (December–April).

🚉 Local Transport in Kingston

Kingston’s public transport is run by JUTC (Jamaica Urban Transit Company)—buses covering most parts of the city. Cheap (JMD 80–150 per ride) but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors. Taxis and route taxis fill the gaps. Uber operates in Kingston and is a practical option for safe, tracked rides at reasonable fares.

Practical Tips

  • Taxis in Kingston: Use licensed taxis (red licence plates) or Uber. Negotiate price before getting in for unmetered taxis.
  • New Kingston vs Downtown: New Kingston is the modern business district; Downtown Kingston is historic but requires awareness. Most visitors stay in New Kingston.
  • Walking: Fine in New Kingston and Hope Road area during daylight. Downtown Kingston is best navigated by taxi after dark.

🚙 Renting a Car

Recommended for visiting the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio, Treasure Beach, and other areas off the main coach routes. Essential if you want to explore Jamaica’s interior on your own schedule.

Things to Know

  • Drive on the LEFT side of the road — British colonial legacy, same as UK, Australia, Caribbean
  • Roads outside Kingston and Montego Bay are narrow, winding, and often potholed — allow longer journey times than maps suggest
  • A valid international or home-country driving licence is accepted
  • Minimum age typically 21–25 depending on the rental company; credit card required for deposit
  • Petrol stations are common in towns; less reliable in rural areas — fill up when you can
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 80–110 km/h on main highways
  • Road signs in English throughout — navigation straightforward

⚠️ Road Conditions

Google Maps travel times in Jamaica are unreliable for rural routes. A journey that looks like 45 minutes can easily take 2 hours on winding mountain roads. The Blue Mountains in particular—only 25km from Kingston as the crow flies—takes well over an hour each way.

💰 Money-Saving Tips

  • Book Knutsford Express in advance: Cheaper than taxis for intercity journeys, especially Kingston–MBJ
  • Negotiate taxi fares before boarding: No meters on most Jamaican taxis — always agree the price first
  • USD is widely accepted: At resorts and tourist areas. However, paying in Jamaican Dollars (JMD) often gets a better effective rate at local businesses
  • Avoid airport currency exchange: Rates at hotel desks and cambios (currency exchange offices) in town are better
  • Car rental from city locations: Usually cheaper than airport pickup — take a taxi first and pick up the car in town
  • Shoulder season (May–June, September–November): Flights and resorts significantly cheaper, weather still excellent outside hurricane season peaks
