Adventure & Active Ecuador
Your complete guide to volcano hikes, Amazon rafting, and outdoor adventures
You’re hiking to the José Ribas Refuge on Cotopaxi at 4,800 metres. The volcano rises another 1,000 metres above you. The páramo spreads in every direction. This is why you came to Ecuador.
Ecuador packs extraordinary adventure into a small package. Volcanoes you can summit in a day. Amazon rivers with class III-IV rapids. Galápagos waters where you snorkel with sea lions. Cloud forests with 500 bird species. All within a country the size of Nevada.
Activities: volcano hiking, whitewater rafting, zip-lining, Galápagos diving, mountain biking, jungle trekking.
Season: Andes hiking best June-September (dry, clear skies). Amazon rafting year-round. Galápagos year-round (wet season December-May brings calmer seas, more wildlife).
Volcano hiking — Cotopaxi and beyond
Cotopaxi (5,897m) is Ecuador's most iconic volcano. Day tours from Quito reach the José Ribas Refuge at 4,800m via 4WD then hike. Summit attempts require a guide, acclimatisation, and ice-climbing experience — don't rush it.
Chimborazo (6,268m) is farther from the Earth's core than Everest — the planet's furthest point from centre. The Whymper Refuge at 5,000m is accessible by car, with guided summit attempts for experienced climbers.
Quilotoa Crater Lake (3,914m): spectacular turquoise lagoon in an extinct volcano caldera. The rim walk takes 5-6 hours. Combine with Cotopaxi for a full day circuit from Quito.
Antisana (5,704m) and Cayambe (5,790m) are less-visited alternatives requiring technical climbing experience. Both offer serious routes and exceptional wilderness.
Altitude: acclimatise in Quito (2,850m) for at least one full day before attempting high hikes. Symptoms — headache, nausea — are warning signs. Descend immediately if they worsen.
Whitewater rafting — Amazon tributaries
Tena (5 hours by bus from Quito) is Ecuador's rafting capital. Upper Napo River offers class III-IV rapids through dense Amazonian jungle. Half-day trips from $30. Guided, safety equipment provided.
Río Toachi and Río Blanco near Santo Domingo offer class III runs close to Quito. Day trips from the capital possible. Good for beginners wanting to try rafting without long travel.
Baños de Agua Santa sits at the gateway to the Amazon. Rafting on the Pastaza River below town with views of Tungurahua volcano is dramatic. Most tours are class III, accessible to beginners.
Kayaking: single kayaks available at Tena and Baños for experienced paddlers. River levels change with rainfall — check conditions with local operators before heading out.
Dry bags are essential. Guides wear helmets and PFDs — so should you. River conditions are most powerful November-April (rainy season); calmer May-October.
Galápagos diving and snorkelling
Snorkelling in the Galápagos requires no experience and delivers unforgettable encounters — sea lions swim alongside you, marine iguanas graze underwater, Galápagos sharks cruise past. Land-based tours include snorkelling at every island stop.
Scuba diving: Darwin and Wolf Islands in the far north offer some of the world's best shark encounters — hammerheads, whale sharks June-November, Galápagos sharks year-round. Dive-only liveaboards access these remote sites.
Isla de la Plata (mainland coast, 2 hours from Puerto López) is the budget alternative — nicknamed "Poor Man's Galápagos." Blue-footed boobies, whale watching June-October, snorkelling, all at a fraction of the cost.
Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) has dive operators renting gear for day trips. Certification not required for snorkelling. Dive certification required for tank dives — check operators' requirements.
Best diving season: October-March (calmer waters, better visibility). Whale sharks appear June-November. Water temperature varies from 18°C (cool season, June-October) to 26°C (warm season, December-May).
Cloud forest adventures — Mindo and more
Mindo (70km from Quito, 2 hours) sits in the western cloud forest at 1,250m. Warmer and greener than the Andes. Activities: zip-lines over the canopy (14 cables, up to 400m long), tubing down the Mindo River, waterfall hikes.
Birdwatching: Mindo is among the world's top birding locations with 500+ species. Hummingbird gardens with 20+ species. Guided dawn birding tours find toucans, tanagers, and antbirds. Best October-February.
Chocolate tours: Mindo has cacao farms and artisan chocolate workshops. Tour the cacao growing, fermenting, and chocolate-making process — sample at the end. Several options on the main road.
Night walks: guided nocturnal tours spot glass frogs, sleeping birds, and insects not seen by day. Most lodges offer or arrange these. Wear boots and bring a good torch.
Getting there: bus from Quito's La Ofelia terminal (2 hours, $3) or organised day tour from Quito hotel pickup.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🏔️ Acclimatise for at least one full day in Quito (2,850m) before attempting Cotopaxi or higher — altitude sickness ruins trips and costs extra rescue money.
- 🌧️ Andes weather changes fast — clear mornings, afternoon clouds/rain almost guaranteed. Start hikes early. Don't push for summit if clouds close in.
- 💧 Drink bottled water throughout Ecuador. Tap water safe in some cities but unreliable — don't risk stomach problems on a multi-day adventure.
- 📱 Download offline maps before heading into national parks and jungle. Signal disappears fast outside main towns. Maps.me has good Cotopaxi and Quilotoa trail data.
- 🦟 Amazon: bring strong insect repellent (DEET 30%+), long-sleeved lightweight clothing, and waterproof boots. Jungle floor stays wet year-round.
