Zenobia wreck near Larnaca is Cyprus's diving crown jewel—Swedish ferry sunk 1980, 172m long, 42m depth. Accessible to Advanced Open Water divers. Penetration possible with training. Marine life colonized entire structure. Best visibility March-May and Sept-Nov (20-30m+).
Cyprus offers 40+ official dive sites—wrecks, reefs, caves, amphora sites. Water temperature 16-27°C enables year-round diving. Summer warmest (27°C), winter requires 5mm wetsuit (16-18°C). Visibility excellent—minimal plankton. Larnaca and Paphos are main diving hubs.
Blue Lagoon Akamas (northwest coast) offers snorkeling and shallow diving—turquoise water, rock formations, friendly fish. Boat access only. Popular day trip from Paphos. Beginners can snorkel, divers explore caves.
PADI/SSI dive centers throughout coast—courses from beginner to technical. Discover Scuba €60-80, Open Water certification €300-400. Daily dive trips €40-60 (2 dives, equipment). Book ahead in summer.

Troodos mountain hiking—pine forests and waterfalls
Artemis Trail (7km loop) circles Mount Olympus peak—Cyprus's highest point. Easy marked trail through black pine forest. Starts from Troodos Square. 2-3 hours. Stunning mountain views. Best April-June (wildflowers) and Sept-Oct (cool temperatures). Free access.
Caledonia Waterfalls trail (3km one-way) follows stream through forest—most scenic Troodos hike. 13m waterfall at end. Moderate difficulty, some stairs. Starts from Troodos village or Platres. Can swim in pools (cold water). Spring has most water flow.
Troodos offers 50+ marked nature trails—from 1km easy walks to 14km challenging routes. Free maps at visitor centers. Trails range altitude 500-1900m. Lower trails accessible winter, higher trails best April-November (snow possible Dec-March).
Persephone Trail (3km) connects Troodos Square to villages—educational path about mythology, flora, geology. Suitable for families. Atalante Trail (14km linear) is longest, most challenging—experienced hikers only. Download offline maps—cell signal spotty mountains.
Wildlife: Cyprus mouflon (wild sheep), rare and shy. More likely: hares, foxes, endemic birds. Troodos is cooler than coast—bring layers even summer (15-25°C vs coastal 30-40°C). Water essential—minimal services on trails.
Mountain biking and cycling routes
Cyprus has extensive cycling network—designated routes, minimal traffic rural roads, varied terrain. Coastal routes flat and scenic. Mountain routes challenging with serious climbs. Spring (March-May) and autumn (Sept-Nov) ideal—summer too hot inland (35-40°C+).
Troodos mountain biking offers technical trails and forest roads—pine forests, villages, mountain views. Trails range beginner to advanced. Bike rentals in Troodos, Platres (€15-25/day). Some hotels offer bikes free to guests. Helmet mandatory on designated routes.
Pafos (Paphos) to Polis coastal route (50km) is popular road cycling—Mediterranean views, quiet roads, villages. Relatively flat. Can extend to Akamas Peninsula (add 30km). Stop at Baths of Aphrodite, seaside tavernas.
EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean Route crosses Cyprus—long-distance route connecting coast and interior. Well-signed, dedicated cycle paths where possible. Ambitious cyclists tackle entire Cyprus crossing (Paphos to Ayia Napa ~200km).
Cycling infrastructure improving—cities add bike lanes, routes get better signage. Cyprus Cycling Federation maintains route maps online. Download GPX files. Group rides common—locals welcome tourists. Road cycling popular winter training destination (pro teams come Nov-March).
Akamas Peninsula and coastal adventure
Akamas (northwest tip) is Cyprus's wildest area—protected national park, no development, rugged coastal trails. Accessible by 4x4, boat, or hiking. Blue Lagoon and sea caves attract kayakers and snorkelers. Rough terrain, bring water/supplies.
Avakas Gorge (3km trail) cuts through limestone canyon—dramatic narrow walls, stream bed path, endemic plants. Moderate difficulty, wear grippy shoes (stream crossings). End point requires rock scrambling. Best March-May (water flowing, flowers blooming). Free access.
Sea kayaking from Coral Bay to Blue Lagoon (12km) shows Akamas from water—sea caves, cliff jumping spots, secluded coves. Half-day guided tours €50-70. Beginners welcome. Full-day tours include snorkeling, lunch on beach.
Baths of Aphrodite coastal trail starts from famous grotto—legend says Aphrodite bathed here. Trail connects to Aphrodite/Adonis trail network (7.5-15km loops). Coastal Mediterranean scrub, sea views, some shade. Water essential—exposed sun.
