📱 Essential Travel Apps for Cuba

Your complete toolkit for Cuba travel — especially the offline tools

Prepare before you land — Cuba's internet is limited

Cuba has some of the world's most restricted internet access. Download maps, translation packs, and guide content before you board the plane. In Cuba, offline is your default.

🇨🇺 Cuba-Specific Must-Haves (Download Before You Go!)

Maps.me (Offline Maps)

Essential

The single most important app for Cuba. Download the entire Cuba map offline before departure — includes streets, trails, and Points of Interest. Works with zero internet. Essential for navigating cities, finding casas, and exploring Viñales and the countryside.

💡 Download Cuba map while still at home — save offline before the flight

Open Maps.me

WhatsApp

Essential

Cubans communicate on WhatsApp. Casa owners, tour guides, taxi drivers, and local contacts all use it. If you have a Cuban Cubacel SIM with mobile data, WhatsApp works even at slow speeds. Booking casas, arranging transport, and contacting guides all happen here.

💡 Message your casa owner before you arrive — they'll arrange everything

Open WhatsApp

Google Translate (Offline Spanish)

Essential

Download the Spanish language pack for offline translation before you leave home. Camera mode translates menus, signs, and notices instantly. Essential outside Havana's tourist areas where English is rarely spoken. Cuban Spanish has distinct vocabulary — the app handles it well.

💡 Download Spanish offline pack now — it won't download in Cuba without wifi

Open Google Translate

Viazul (Cuba Bus Booking)

Cuba's tourist bus network — the most reliable way to travel between cities independently. Book Havana–Trinidad, Havana–Viñales, and other routes in advance. Seats sell out in high season. The website works best at home before arrival — Cuban internet makes online booking difficult.

💡 Book Viazul tickets before you fly — saves time and guarantees your seat

Open Viazul

✈️ Flight Search & Booking

Google Flights

Best overall flight search. Price tracking, flexible dates, and the cleanest interface. Use the calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly to Havana or Varadero.

Open Google Flights

Skyscanner

"Everywhere" search shows cheapest destinations from your home airport. Also great for finding the cheapest month to fly. Finds Cuba charter deals that Google Flights sometimes misses.

Open Skyscanner

Hopper

Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Set alerts and book at the perfect moment. Particularly useful for Cuba flights which fluctuate significantly by season.

Open Hopper

Momondo

Compares results from multiple search engines. Sometimes finds deals the others miss. Worth checking for charter flights to Varadero from European cities.

Open Momondo

Kiwi.com

Best for complex multi-city routes. Useful for constructing itineraries via Mexico City or Cancún if routing through third countries (essential for some nationalities).

Open Kiwi.com
💡 PRO TIP: Compare, Then Book Direct

Use these apps to find the best prices and routes — but book directly on the airline's website.

Why? Third-party bookings can cause headaches with:

  • Customer service runaround
  • Difficult changes & cancellations
  • Lost perks and seat selection
  • Complicated refunds

The few dollars you might save isn't worth the hassle when things go wrong.

🗺️ Navigation & Maps

Google Maps

Essential

Download offline maps for all Cuban cities and regions before departure. Functions excellently without internet. Shows restaurant locations, casas, and attractions. Less detailed than Maps.me for rural areas — use both.

💡 Download Havana, Trinidad, Viñales, Varadero, and Santiago maps offline

Open Google Maps

Maps.me

Essential

Superior offline maps with hiking trails and rural detail. Better than Google Maps for Viñales Valley, Sierra Maestra, and Ciénaga de Zapata. Completely offline. Community-updated — often more accurate for Cuba's casas and paladares.

💡 Download full Cuba map — it covers the entire island in one download

Open Maps.me

Rome2Rio

Plans routes combining buses, flights, and transfers. Useful for calculating Havana–Varadero, Havana–Trinidad, and other multi-leg journeys. Shows options with approximate times and costs.

Open Rome2Rio

No Uber/Bolt in Cuba

Ride-sharing apps do not operate in Cuba. Use Cubataxi (state taxis, often hailed by phone or at ranks), coco-taxis for short Havana hops, or bicitaxis in smaller cities. Always agree the fare in CUP before departing.

🛏️ Accommodation & Comfort

Airbnb

Cuba's casas particulares are well represented on Airbnb. Many owners list here for international travellers. Book ahead from home — Cuban internet makes in-country booking difficult. Screenshot all confirmations.

Search Cuba on Airbnb

Hostelworld

Good selection of Cuban casas and hostels. Reviews from backpackers who've actually stayed. Havana, Trinidad, Viñales, and Varadero all have decent options. Read recent reviews — conditions change.

Open Hostelworld Cuba

Booking.com

Largest selection including resort hotels in Varadero and Cayo Coco. Free cancellation on most bookings. Screenshot confirmation details — Cuban internet may prevent in-country access to your booking.

Open Booking.com

Dayuse

Game-changer

Book hotel rooms just for the day — useful for long layovers or if you arrive early and need a shower and rest. Availability in major Cuban cities varies but worth checking for resort areas.

Open Dayuse

💬 Translation & Communication

Google Translate

Essential

Download Spanish language pack for offline use before departure. Camera mode translates menus, signs, and notices instantly offline. Conversation mode allows back-and-forth translation without typing. Handles Cuban slang reasonably well.

💡 Cuban Spanish includes unique vocabulary — the app handles most of it

Open Google Translate

WhatsApp

Essential

Cuba's primary communication platform. Message casa owners, book private taxis, contact tour guides — all via WhatsApp. If you get a Cuban Cubacel SIM, WhatsApp works on mobile data (slowly). Essential for independent travel.

Open WhatsApp

🎒 On The Ground

Bounce

Store your luggage anywhere — cafes, hotels, shops. Perfect for those hours between checkout and your Viazul bus. Availability in Cuban cities is limited but growing. Insured and secure.

Open Bounce

XE Currency

Essential

Works offline once loaded. Critical for Cuba where the currency situation is complex — know the current CUP exchange rate before changing money at CaDECA offices. Prevents you from being shortchanged on poor-rate transactions.

💡 Check CUP rates online before arriving — rates can vary significantly

Open XE Currency

PackPoint

Essential

Enter your destination, dates, and activities — builds a packing list based on weather. Essential for Cuba's varied conditions: tropical heat in Varadero, cooler mountain evenings in Sierra Maestra, humid Havana summer heat.

Open PackPoint

TripAdvisor

Recent reviews help find authentic paladares, avoid tourist traps, and identify which casas have improved or declined. Download content while at home — may not load well in Cuba. Filter reviews by language for local perspective.

Viator

Largest selection of tours and activities worldwide. Book Cuba tours before you arrive — diving, colonial city walks, tobacco farm visits, and classic car experiences. Mobile tickets work even offline once downloaded.

Open Viator

💳 Payment & Money

Wise (Formerly TransferWise)

Multi-currency card with good exchange rates. Useful for converting money before Cuba — some foreign cards do not work in Cuban ATMs at all. Load the currencies you need before departure. Note: US-issued cards generally don't work in Cuba.

💡 Cuba is heavily cash-based — bring more cash than you think you'll need

Open Wise

Splitwise

Expense splitting for groups. Track who paid for taxis, meals, and accommodation. Works fully offline. Particularly useful in Cuba where everything is cash and receipts are rare.

Open Splitwise

✅ Pre-Trip Download Checklist

Download BEFORE you leave — Cuba's internet won't let you do this easily:

  • ✅ Maps.me (download full Cuba map offline)
  • ✅ Google Maps (download Havana, Trinidad, Viñales, Varadero, Santiago offline)
  • ✅ Google Translate (download Spanish offline language pack)
  • ✅ WhatsApp (message your casa and any booked guides before departure)
  • ✅ Viazul — book bus tickets online before you go
  • ✅ Accommodation confirmations saved offline (screenshot everything)
  • ✅ XE Currency — check and save current CUP exchange rate
  • ✅ Travel insurance documents downloaded and accessible offline

💡 App & Tech Tips for Cuba

  • Internet reality: Cuba has limited public WiFi at ETECSA hotspots (parks, hotels, airports). Buy Nauta cards (1–5 hour blocks) from ETECSA offices or authorised resellers. Average speed: 2–5 Mbps when working.
  • Cuban SIM card: Cubacel sells tourist SIMs at airports (approx. 1–5 CUC equivalent per GB). WhatsApp works on mobile data. Social media may require VPN (VPN use is legally ambiguous).
  • Power banks essential: Heavy map use drains batteries. Cuba's heat accelerates battery drain. Power outages (apagones) are common in cities — charge everything when you can. Sockets: Type A/B (standard US/North American — no adapter needed for US devices; European devices need an adapter).
  • Screenshot everything: Bus tickets, hotel confirmations, restaurant reservations, tour vouchers. Save to camera roll, not cloud storage. Cuban internet makes cloud retrieval unreliable.
  • Carry a paper map: Download offline maps but also carry a printed street map of Havana. Battery-independent navigation matters in Cuba more than most places.
  • VPN consideration: If you use a VPN, configure it before you enter Cuba. Installing VPN software within Cuba can be difficult.
