Beach & Sun Cambodia
Your complete guide to Cambodia's beaches, islands, and tropical paradise
The ferry cuts through turquoise water. Ahead—Koh Rong's white sand beaches appear. 28 beaches on this island alone. Water so clear you see the bottom 10 meters down.
Cambodia's islands deliver what Thailand promised 20 years ago: underdeveloped paradise. Koh Rong for parties and energy. Koh Rong Samloem for silence and hammocks. Bioluminescent plankton lighting the sea at night.
From Sihanoukville's departure point to remote island beaches, Cambodian coast life is coconuts, cheap beer, fresh seafood, and water temperatures that never drop below 25°C.
Peak season November-May. Wet season brings half-price accommodation.
Koh Rong—island energy
Cambodia's second-largest island. 78 square kilometers, 28 beaches, one main tourist hub. Koh Touch Beach is where ferries arrive—backpacker central with guesthouses, bars, beach parties, $0.50 beer.
Sok San Beach on the west side stretches 7km—nearly empty white sand, fewer tourists, stunning sunsets. Takes effort to reach (boat or motorbike) but worth it for isolation.
Long Set Beach (4K Beach) sits 30 minutes walk from Koh Touch. Several resorts, beautiful water, quieter vibe. Good compromise between accessibility and peace.
Water activities: snorkeling, diving (coral reefs decent but not Thailand-level), kayaking, paddleboarding. Koh Rong Dive Center offers PADI courses—$90 Discover Scuba, $105 fun dives. Khmer Dive Group runs snorkeling day trips with lunch.
Ferries from Sihanoukville: $25 return, 45 minutes. Five operators—Speed Ferry, GTVC, Buva Sea. Book online through Visit Koh Rong to avoid sold-out boats.
Koh Rong Samloem—quiet sister island
20-minute ferry from Koh Rong or direct from Sihanoukville. Smaller, calmer, no party scene. Saracen Bay is the main beach—1.5km of white sand, over 25 resorts, small shops, family-friendly.
Lazy Beach on the west side earned National Geographic's "Top 21 Beaches in the World" ranking. One resort only, very basic accommodation ($20-30/night), no WiFi, no shops. 40-minute jungle hike from Saracen Bay or private boat. Worth it for pristine solitude.
M'Pai Bay offers Khmer village culture. Sunset Beach has excellent snorkeling. Both accessible by boat or hike. Fewer tourists, more authentic experience.
Water warmer than Koh Rong—protected bays, calm conditions. Perfect for families, couples, anyone seeking relaxation over nightlife. Visit Saracen Bay guide for resort details.
Waterfall near Freedom Island resort—swim in jungle pool, bar on-site. Dries up February-March but beautiful November-January.
Bioluminescent plankton—nature's light show
Both islands host bioluminescent plankton year-round. Water glows blue when disturbed—swim, splash, watch stars underwater. Best on moonless nights away from shore lights.
Boat tours cost $5-10 per person, depart 7pm, 2 hours total. Book on beach or through resort. Long Set Beach and Police Beach offer shore viewing without tours—walk 15 minutes from Koh Touch.
Swimming with plankton possible but not recommended—night time, open water, tropical marine life hunting. Viewing from boat or shallow areas safer. The glow is spectacular regardless. Read complete plankton guide.
Weather affects visibility—cloudy nights better (moon hidden). Rainy season actually improves chances. Dry season offers more predictable conditions but brighter moon.
Don't miss this. It's magical. Sparkles like stars with every movement. Photos don't capture it—you need to see it.
Mainland beaches—Sihanoukville and beyond
Sihanoukville transformed rapidly—Chinese casino development changed everything. Ochheuteal Beach now high-rises and construction. Water quality declined. Not recommended for swimming anymore.
Otres Beach, 15 minutes south, stays more relaxed. 2km of sand, beach shack bars, seafood restaurants. Otres 2 quieter than Otres 1. Otres Beach Hotel offers decent mid-range stay. Budget bungalows $8-20, hotels $30-60.
Kep Beach is small, rocky, locals-focused. The real draw is crab market and Kampot pepper. Not a beach destination—use as base for countryside exploration.
Koh Kong province (west coast near Thailand) has Koh Kong Island and undeveloped coastline. Less infrastructure, harder access, true off-grid experience. For adventurous only.
Bottom line: Skip mainland beaches. Go straight to islands. Sihanoukville is purely a ferry departure point now. One night maximum, then escape to Koh Rong.

💡 Insider Tips
- ⛴️ Book ferry tickets online ahead—boats sell out December-February. $25 return Sihanoukville to islands. Five ferry companies, all similar quality.
- 🌊 Water temperature never drops below 25°C—swim year-round comfortable. Peak warmth March-May (28-30°C). No wetsuit needed snorkeling.
- 🦟 Sand flies (sandflies) bite at dawn/dusk on beaches. Bring strong insect repellent, wear shoes during twilight hours, avoid sitting directly on sand.
- 💰 Bring cash—islands have no ATMs. Some resorts take cards (10% fee). Withdraw maximum in Sihanoukville before ferry. USD preferred over riel.
- 📵 WiFi unreliable on islands—don't expect to work remotely. Buy Cambodian SIM before departing mainland if connectivity essential. True digital detox.
