Ski & Winter Andorra

Your complete guide to Pyrenean skiing, snowboarding, and winter mountain adventures

The lift climbs. Soldeu village shrinks below. At 2,500m, you're standing above Grandvalira's vast ski domain—215km of slopes spreading across six sectors. The Pyrenees tower around you, snow guaranteed November-April.

Andorran skiing rivals the Alps—modern lifts, varied terrain, altitude ensuring snow. Grandvalira (largest) and Vallnord (two separate areas) offer 308km combined slopes. Day passes €60-70, season passes available. Ski-in/ski-out villages like Soldeu, Pas de la Casa bring Alpine convenience at lower prices.

Winter here means more than skiing—snowshoeing through silent forests, dog sledding across frozen valleys, thermal spa après-ski at Caldea. Season peaks February-March for stable snow and longer days. But December-January offers emptier slopes, colder temperatures.

Grandvalira—Pyrenees' largest ski resort

Grandvalira spans 215km of slopes across six interconnected sectors—Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa. All accessed with single lift pass.

Altitude range 1,710m (base) to 2,640m (top)—reliable snow November-April. Peak season February-March brings stable conditions, longer daylight (6-7 hours vs 4-5 winter).

Lift pass prices: Adult day pass €67 peak season, multi-day discounts available. Online booking saves €5-10 per day. Season pass around €800 for unlimited access.

Soldeu and El Tarter are main base villages—ski-in/ski-out hotels, restaurants, ski schools. Pas de la Casa sits on French border—highest village, longest season, duty-free shopping.

Terrain variety: 20% beginner, 45% intermediate, 35% advanced/expert. Snowparks for freestylers, off-piste areas for powder seekers (guide recommended). Terrain suits families and serious skiers equally.

Vallnord—Pal-Arinsal and Ordino-Arcalís

Vallnord combines two separate ski areas—Pal-Arinsal (63km slopes) and Ordino-Arcalís (30.5km slopes). Same lift pass covers both but areas not physically connected.

Pal-Arinsal offers family-friendly terrain—wide pistes, gentle slopes, forest skiing. Pal side sunnier, Arinsal side steeper, both interconnected. Good for intermediates and kids.

Ordino-Arcalís sits higher (up to 2,625m)—better snow, steeper terrain, freeride zones. Advanced skiers prefer this area. Quieter than Grandvalira, more local vibe.

Lift pass €60-65/day, combined Andorra Pass (all resorts) around €75/day. Multi-day savings significant—6-day pass drops to €50-55/day equivalent.

Villages: La Massana (Pal-Arinsal base), Ordino (Arcalís base). Less ski-in/ski-out than Grandvalira but authentic village atmosphere, lower accommodation costs.

Ski schools, rentals, and learning

Andorra's ski schools offer English instruction—group lessons €40-60 per 2-hour session, private €70-100/hour. Multi-day packages save money.

Equipment rental at resort bases—full package (skis/board, boots, poles) €30-50/day depending quality. Book online for 10-15% discount. High-end gear €60-80/day.

Beginner areas in all sectors—free or discounted beginner lifts. Grandvalira's "Formigal" areas perfect for first-timers, wide gentle slopes.

Kids' ski school very popular—Grandvalira's "Snowtastic" program combines lessons with play. Half-day €50-70 including lunch, supervision. Starts age 3.

Snowboard parks well-developed—jumps, rails, halfpipes. Soldeu's park attracts freestylers. Private lessons available for park features, tricks.

Beyond skiing—winter activities

Snowshoeing trails throughout valleys—marked routes, rental €10-15/day. Guided night snowshoe tours with dinner available—romantic, different perspective.

Dog sledding near Grau Roig and Naturland—mushing experiences €80-120 for 1-2 hours. Drive own sled or passenger. Huskies energetic, fun for families.

Snowmobiling tours through backcountry—guided only, €100-150 for 2-3 hours. Fast, thrilling. License required (guide checks). Cold—dress very warm.

💡 Insider Tips

  • ⛷️ Buy lift passes online days ahead—saves €5-10/day vs ticket window. Early booking (Oct-Nov) gets biggest discounts for season.
  • 🏔️ Grandvalira busy weekends, quieter Mon-Fri. February school holidays (UK/France) bring crowds—avoid or book accommodation 6+ months ahead.
  • 🧥 Altitude means cold—even sunny days are -5 to -10°C on slopes. Layer properly: base layer, fleece, waterproof shell. Goggles essential, sunscreen mandatory.
  • 🚡 First lifts 8:30-9am, last lifts down 4:30-5pm depending sector. Start early for fresh snow, fewer people. Last run down crowded—leave 30min before close.
  • 💰 Andorra Pass (all 3 resorts) worth it if skiing 4+ days. Single-resort passes better for short trips. Check which sectors you'll actually use before buying multi-resort.
