Tara River rafting—Europe's deepest canyon
Tara River is Serbia's premier rafting destination—known as the "Tear of Europe" for its crystal-clear water. The river cuts through Europe's deepest canyon, with walls reaching 1,300 meters.
Rafting trips range from gentle floats for families to challenging rapids for experienced paddlers. May-October season, with spring (May-June) offering highest water levels from snowmelt. Most trips full-day or multi-day with camping.
Drina River also popular—slightly calmer than Tara, scenic, accessible. Ibar and Lim rivers offer additional options. Local operators based in Tara Mountain region provide guides, equipment, transport.
Prices affordable by European standards—day trip 3,000-6,000 RSD (€25-50) per person including equipment, guide, sometimes lunch. Multi-day trips 8,000-15,000 RSD (€70-130).
No experience needed for beginner trips—guides handle navigation, safety briefings provided. Wear swimwear, bring dry clothes, waterproof bags for valuables. Water cold even in summer.
Hiking and trekking—mountains and national parks
Tara National Park offers 220 sq km of forested slopes with diverse hiking trails. Viewpoints like Banjska Stena and Bilješka Stena provide dramatic canyon vistas. Trails range from easy walks to full-day treks.
Kopaonik National Park features over 1,000 plant species and trails for all levels. The alpine trail "Josif Pančić" leads to Pančić's Peak at 2,017 meters—the highest point. Guided hikes available through national park offices.
Fruška Gora National Park north of Belgrade has extensive hiking network through forests and orchards. Medieval monasteries scattered throughout—combine hiking with cultural stops. Annual marathon held late April.
Stara Planina (Old Mountain) in eastern Serbia offers traditional mountain houses and remote trails. Less developed, more authentic, fewer tourists. Bring supplies—facilities limited.
Marked trails exist but aren't always well-maintained. Topographic maps recommended for longer hikes. Weather changes quickly in mountains—bring layers, rain gear, sufficient water.
Cycling and mountain biking
The Danube Cycle Trail runs 1,800 miles across 10 countries—365 miles through Serbia along the Danube River. Mostly flat, well-marked, scenic. Connects Belgrade, Novi Sad, and smaller Danube towns.
Fruška Gora National Park features dedicated cycling routes through forests. Stops at monasteries, wineries, viewpoints. Multi-day cycling tours available with accommodation arranged.
Mountain biking trails exist in Kopaonik, Tara, and Zlatibor regions. Technical difficulty varies—ask locals or tour operators for route recommendations. Bike rentals available at mountain resorts.
Belgrade has growing urban cycling scene—bike lanes expanding, rental shops available. Danube and Sava riverbanks have paths for casual riding. Traffic heavy in city center—stay alert.
Serbia hosts cycling events and competitions throughout year. EuroVelo routes pass through—international long-distance cycling network. Infrastructure improving but not at Western European level yet.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🚣 Book rafting trips in advance during peak season (July-Aug)—popular routes fill up. Spring (May-June) offers highest water levels but colder temperatures.
- 🥾 Hiking trails not always well-marked—download offline maps (Maps.me works), carry topographic map for longer treks. Cell service spotty in mountains.
- 💶 Cash essential for adventure activities—many operators don't accept cards. Bring Serbian dinars, enough to cover full cost plus tips for guides.
- ☀️ Mountain weather changes fast—bring layers, rain gear, sun protection even in summer. Temperatures 10-15°C cooler at altitude than valleys.
- 🏥 Travel insurance with adventure sports coverage recommended—activities carry risks, rescue/medical costs high in remote areas. Check policy includes water sports, hiking.
