Beach & Sun China

Your complete guide to Hainan Island, tropical beaches, and seaside China

You're at Yalong Bay in Sanya. White sand, turquoise water, 28°C. This is China's tropical south—Hainan Island, "Hawaii of China."

Most Chinese beaches are temperate (northern coast) or tropical (Hainan only). Sanya dominates—year-round swimming, resort hotels, clear water. Mainland coast offers alternatives—Qingdao (German colonial beaches), Xiamen (island access), Shenzhen (urban beach).

Best beaches: Yalong Bay (luxury), Dadonghai (accessible), Houhai (surfers), Sanya Bay (long coast). Season: November-April (dry, 25-28°C), May-October (hot, rainy, typhoons possible).

Sanya and Hainan—tropical beach paradise

Sanya at Hainan's southern tip is China's only proper tropical beach destination—258km coastline, year-round 20°C+ water, palm trees, resorts.

Yalong Bay (15km east of Sanya) is picture-perfect—7.5km crescent beach, international resorts, clear water. Most developed, most expensive, most beautiful.

Dadonghai Bay is Sanya's accessible beach—2.9km coastline, budget hotels, beach activities, family-friendly. Busy but convenient.

Sanya Bay stretches 20km west—Coconut Corridor, longest beach, less crowded than Yalong/Dadonghai. Mix of budget and mid-range hotels.

Houhai Beach (30km northeast) attracts beginner surfers—low-key, fewer crowds, surf schools. Best for those avoiding resort scene.

Activities and water sports

Surfing at Houhai Beach—lessons available (200-300 RMB), board rentals cheap. Best November-March. Beginner-friendly waves.

Diving and snorkeling at Wuzhizhou Island (30km north of Sanya)—coral reefs, tropical fish, clear water. Day trips include boat, lunch, gear. Around 300-500 RMB.

Parasailing, jet skiing, banana boats—standard beach activities at major beaches. Negotiate prices (often inflated for tourists).

Island hopping in Hainan—ferries to smaller islands, quieter beaches, local seafood restaurants. Wuzhizhou, West Island, Boundary Island all accessible.

Seafood is excellent—beachfront restaurants serve fresh catch. Choose your fish/shellfish from tanks, specify cooking style. Prices negotiable.

Mainland coastal alternatives

Qingdao (Shandong) offers temperate beaches with German colonial architecture—No. 1 Bathing Beach most famous. Tsingtao beer brewed here. Summer only (June-Aug).

Xiamen (Fujian) provides urban beach access and Gulangyu Island—car-free island with beaches, colonial buildings, seafood. Year-round mild climate.

Shenzhen has urban beaches—Dameisha (crowded, free), Xiaomeisha (less crowded, 25 RMB entry). Convenient from Hong Kong. Not pristine but accessible.

Beidaihe (near Beijing) is historic beach resort—emperors' summer retreat, now domestic tourists. 3 hours from Beijing. July-August only.

Mainland beaches can't compete with Hainan tropics—colder water, shorter season, more development. Hainan is China's proper beach destination.

Practical beach info

Season matters—November-April is Sanya's dry season (25-28°C, sunny). May-October brings rain, heat, humidity, typhoon risk.

Resort prices vary wildly—budget guesthouses 200 RMB/night, luxury resorts 2,000+. Book ahead for Chinese holidays (Golden Weeks).

Sunscreen essential—tropical sun intense. Chinese sunscreen emphasizes whitening (cultural preference). Bring Western brands if preferred.

Beach vendors aggressive—expect constant offers for jet skis, massages, fruit. Firm "bu yao" (don't want) works. Or ignore.

Flying to Sanya—direct flights from Beijing (4h), Shanghai (3h), Chengdu (2.5h). High-speed rail reaches Hainan via ferry (longer but scenic).
