Getting to and around Rwanda
Kigali International Airport (KGL) - Rwanda's main international gateway, just 5km from central Kigali. Small, modern, and famously easy: arrivals to your hotel can take under 20 minutes. There is no train link—taxis and ride apps handle the short hop into town.

National carrier: RwandAir flies to Kigali from London, Brussels, Dubai, Doha, and a wide network of African cities.
From Europe: Brussels Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, and RwandAir connect via Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, and Istanbul.
From the Gulf & Asia: Qatar Airways (Doha), Emirates and flydubai (Dubai), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul).
From Africa: Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa), Kenya Airways (Nairobi), and RwandAir link Kigali to most major hubs daily.
Kigali is one of the most convenient capitals in Africa to land in—the airport is so close to town that you can often check in to your hotel and still make a sunset walk. Book RwandAir's Kigali–Kamembe flight if Nyungwe is your priority.
Volkswagen's Move app offers app-booked cars across Kigali with upfront pricing. Journey time from the airport to the center: 15–25 minutes. Cost: around $8.2 to $12.

Motorcycle taxis (motos) are everywhere and cheap, but not ideal straight off a long-haul flight with luggage. Short city hops cost from $0.3. Helmets are provided and legally required.
Kigali is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest and cleanest cities. Walking at night is generally comfortable, and traffic is far calmer than in most regional capitals.
Overland from Uganda—Border crossings at Gatuna (Katuna) and Cyanika. Coaches run from Kampala to Kigali (8–10 hours). A common budget route.
Overland from Tanzania—Rusumo Falls border in the east, used by long-distance buses heading to Dar es Salaam and the lake region.
Overland from DR Congo—The La Corniche crossing at Rubavu/Gisenyi connects directly to Goma, and Rusizi connects to Bukavu. Check current security advice before crossing.
Overland from Burundi—Border at Akanyaru/Nemba. Less common for tourists; situation can change, so verify before travel.
East Africa Tourist Visa—If you're combining Rwanda with Uganda and Kenya, this single visa covers all three and makes land crossings between them seamless.
Rwanda has one of Africa's most open visa policies. Citizens of all countries can get a 30-day visa on arrival, no prior application needed. The single-entry tourist visa costs $50. Many African nationals and some others enter visa-free.
You can still apply online in advance through the official Irembo portal to save time at the airport. The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100, valid 90 days, multiple entry) covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya together. Beware of unofficial "visa agent" sites—Irembo is the only government portal.

Rwanda has no passenger railway, but its bus network is excellent by regional standards—scheduled, comfortable, and affordable. Operators like Volcano Express, Ritco, and Horizon link Kigali to Musanze, Rubavu (Gisenyi), Huye, and Rusizi. Kigali–Musanze runs around $1.7 and takes about 2 hours. Buses leave from Nyabugogo, the main bus terminal.
RwandAir operates short hops between Kigali and Kamembe (for Nyungwe). Useful if you want to save the 5–6 hour drive south, though most visitors travel by road to enjoy the scenery of the "land of a thousand hills".
For the national parks, most travelers hire a 4x4 with a driver-guide—roads to and inside the parks are rough, and operators handle permits and logistics. This is the standard way to do a gorilla or safari trip.
The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park (Musanze) is paved and scenic—about 2.5 hours. Many lodges and tour operators include transfers, so you rarely need to self-drive.
Kigali is hilly and spread out, so most people get around by moto or ride app rather than on foot.
Tipping isn't expected for short moto rides. For longer private hires, rounding up is appreciated.
Self-driving is possible but most visitors prefer a driver-guide, especially for the parks. If you do rent, a 4x4 is essential outside the main paved corridors.
For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, a guided transfer is strongly recommended. Park logistics, permits, and early-morning starts are far easier with an operator handling everything.
