Oman — Golf Guide

From an Indian Ocean-facing World Top 100 course to floodlit fairways, ancient wadi greens, and a seaside nine-hole overlooking the Gulf — Oman is Arabia's most varied golf destination.

Oman has five grass golf courses within an hour of Muscat, a record-breaking World Top 100 ranking, and a climate that makes October to April arguably the finest golf weather anywhere on the planet. Green fees are competitive, tee times are available, and no other Gulf country offers anything close to the scenic diversity — mountain wadis, Indian Ocean coastlines, and desert dunes as backdrops in a single day's drive. This is the Gulf's most underrated golf destination.

Muscat — the flagship courses

Four world-class courses within 45 minutes of central Muscat, covering every standard from the European Tour host to Oman's oldest sand-turned-grass club.

Al Mouj Golf

📍 Al Mouj Marina, Muscat  |  18 holes, Par 72

Greg Norman-designed links-style course fronting the Indian Ocean and backed by the Hajar Mountains — consistently ranked World Top 100 and Number Two in the Middle East. Host of the European Tour's Oman Open, Al Mouj plays as good as it looks: 7,326-yard championship layout with ocean-facing holes, natural water features, and 170+ bird species living in the surrounding habitat. The new 2026 clubhouse adds a TopTracer driving range, Padel courts, restaurant, and gym. Green fees range from $70 to $239 depending on season and visitor status. Caddy and buggy hire available.

Ghala Golf Club

📍 Baushar, Muscat  |  18 holes, Par 72

Oman's oldest club (established 1971) and its most scenic in terms of natural setting: the Bill Logmuir-designed course is cut into a wadi at the foot of the Al Hajar Mountains, with narrow fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and mountain panoramas on every hole. 250+ members — more than any other club in Oman — attests to the loyalty it inspires. The renovated clubhouse has open-air terrace views across the 9th, 15th, and 18th holes. Ranked in the world's top 100 courses and "Top 30 Most Unique" by Golfscape. Suitable for all handicap levels; the wadi terrain gives experienced players a genuine test.

LA VIE Club (Muscat Hills)

📍 Madinat Al Irfan, Muscat  |  18 holes, Par 72

Oman's first fully grassed 18-hole course (opened 2009 as Muscat Hills, relaunched under Troon management as LA VIE Club in 2023). Paul Thomas-designed, the course uses the natural wadi and hillside terrain between Muscat Airport and the mountains — dramatic elevation changes, canyon views, and some of the most technically interesting holes in Oman. The facility now includes Oman's first TopTracer Range, a full Golf Academy with PGA professionals, two putting greens, and a chipping area. Green fees from $70 in winter. Five minutes from Muscat International Airport — ideal for a round before a flight.

Ras Al Hamra Golf Club

📍 Qurm, Muscat  |  18 holes, Par 72

The only fully floodlit golf course in Oman — Ras Al Hamra lets you tee off after sunset, which in Muscat's October–April season means playing in 22°C air temperature with the city lights behind you. The course winds through natural dunes and desert landscape with views of the Arabian Gulf. A clubhouse, pro shop, Golf Academy, and driving range complete the facility. Popular with Muscat's resident golf community for twilight rounds after work. The floodlit capability makes it a genuine alternative to Al Mouj for visitors who want an evening round while keeping daytime free for sightseeing.

Beyond Muscat — coastal & regional golf

Oman's coastal geography creates golf settings you won't find in Dubai or Qatar. The Jebel Sifah course, 45 minutes south of Muscat, is the most visually spectacular in the country.

🌅

Jebel Sifah Golf Course

📍 Jebel Sifah, 45 km south of Muscat  |  9 holes (Par 36), played as 18 holes (Par 72)

Oman's only seaside golf course — Harradine Golf-designed, carved into the coastal headland 45 minutes south of Muscat with the Gulf of Oman on one side and the Hajar Mountains on the other. The nine holes play as 18 from five different tee positions (5,686 to 7,268 yards). Green fees are the most accessible in Oman: $47 for 9 holes, $70 for 18. PGA professional lessons available. The marina restaurant overlooking the course makes a good post-round lunch. Drive from Muscat is scenic — wadi crossings and coastal road — making the journey part of the experience.

Oman Golf Association

📍 National governing body · All 5 Oman courses listed

The Oman Golf Association (OGA) is the national governing body for golf in Oman and the best starting point for visitors planning a golf itinerary. The association website lists all five grass courses in Oman with current contact details, green fee ranges, and facility information. It also manages the national handicap system (required for tournament play) and coordinates visiting group bookings. For visiting golf societies or groups booking multiple courses across a week, contacting the OGA directly often yields better rates and coordinated tee-time availability than booking each course independently.

💡 Golf Tips for Oman

  • 📅 Season: October to April is Oman's golf season. May to September brings temperatures of 40°C+ — nobody plays outdoors. The Al Mouj and Ghala courses close or dramatically reduce hours June–August. Book for winter only
  • 🌅 Tee times: Early morning (7am–9am) and late afternoon (3pm–5pm) are the most comfortable slots. Midday October–March is manageable but 28–32°C by noon. At Ras Al Hamra, evening tee times (5pm–7pm) under the floodlights are genuinely enjoyable
  • 🎽 Dress code: Smart golf attire required at all courses — collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers. Denim not permitted. Al Mouj and LA VIE Club are strictest; Ghala and Jebel Sifah are slightly more relaxed but still expect proper golf dress
  • 🏌️ Equipment hire: All five courses offer club hire. Quality varies — Al Mouj and LA VIE Club have modern hire sets; Ghala's hire equipment is older. If you play seriously, bring your own clubs or arrange rental before arrival
  • 🚗 Transport: None of the courses is accessible without a car. Taxis and Careem are available from Muscat hotels to all four Muscat courses. Jebel Sifah requires a hire car or arranged transfer — taxis typically won't make the 45-minute return journey without a waiting fee
  • 💧 Hydration: Even in November–March, the Gulf sun is strong. Two litres of water per round minimum. Most courses have drinks carts on the course; Al Mouj's restaurant also operates a mobile refreshment service. Never underestimate dehydration on an 18-hole round in Oman
