Cross-country skiing—national sport

Oslo Nordmarka—170km+ groomed trails, free access. Locals ski commute to work. Try it—rentals available, trails well-maintained, very Norwegian experience.

Lillehammer area—1994 Olympics site. World-class trails, historic venues. Birkebeinerrennet race (54km) held annually—recreational and elite categories.

Sjusjøen—cross-country mecca. 350km groomed trails, ski-in/ski-out accommodation. More trails than downhill. Norwegian skiing is cross-country focused.

Technique: classic or skate style. Classic easier for beginners. Norwegians learn as children. Rentals everywhere, lessons available. Don't skip trying this.

Season: December-April depending on snow. March best—longer days, stable snow, warmer. Early season dark, late season slushy.

Swimming and water fitness

Cold water swimming—Norwegian norm. Oslo fjord, Bergen harbor, Lofoten beaches. Summer water 12-18°C. Brief swims, no wetsuits. Invigorating, allegedly healthy.
