Sport & Fitness Lebanon

Hiking, diving, paragliding, and active coast days

You are breathing hard on the last switchback. Below, the Qadisha gorge opens like a green scar. A monastery roof catches the sun. This is Lebanon’s fitness reward—views that justify the climb.

Active travellers mix Mediterranean water sports with mountain hiking and ski in winter. Beirut has gyms and seafront running on the Corniche, but the standout activities are outdoors: Qadisha trails, Baatara gorge hikes, scuba introductions, tandem paragliding above Jounieh, and ski at Mzaar.

Book operators with certified guides for climbing, diving, and paragliding. Summer heat limits midday exertion—start hikes early and carry more water than you would in Europe.

Hiking and trail culture

Lebanon Mountain Trail (470 km national trail) links villages from north to south; most visitors sample day sections with guides rather than thru-hiking.

Qadisha Valley offers the most dramatic day hikes between monasteries. Shouf cedar reserves have gentler marked paths. Baatara and Akoura add waterfall and lake scenery.

Water sports and coast fitness

Scuba schools run beginner dives from Beirut and Jounieh. Stand-up paddle and kayak rentals appear seasonally at beach clubs in Batroun and Byblos.

Corniche jogging is popular at sunrise before heat and traffic build. Pigeon Rocks boat loops are light activity; swimming is better south or at paid beach clubs with lifeguards.

Air sports and winter ski

Tandem paragliding from Ghosta above Jounieh is the main air sport. Operators include transport, insurance, and often video.

January–March skiing at Mzaar counts as serious leg day. Rental gear and lessons available on site.

Urban fitness in Beirut

International-chain and boutique gyms cluster in Hamra, Achrafieh, and Verdun. Day passes exist at some hotels. Outdoor alternatives: Corniche run, St Nicolas stairs repeats in Gemmayzeh, and seafront yoga classes in summer (check local listings weekly).

  • 🤿 Wait 24 hours after diving before flying home if you did multiple dives.
  • 👟 Trail shoes with grip beat running shoes on monastery steps.
  • 📱 Lebanon Mountain Trail sections need offline GPS; signal drops in valleys.
