Mountains Kenya
Your complete guide to Mt Kenya, Mt Elgon, and high-altitude trekking
Three AM. Freezing. You're pushing for Point Lenana—4,985 meters, Mt Kenya's trekker summit. Headlamp beam on volcanic rock. Thin air. Every step deliberate. Then sunrise hits the glaciers. Africa spreads below.
Kenya's mountains deliver equatorial high-altitude experiences—Mt Kenya (5,199m, Africa's second-highest), Mt Elgon (4,321m, eighth-highest), Great Rift Valley escarpments. Glaciers at the equator. Bamboo forests. Afro-alpine moorlands. Giant groundsels. Unique ecosystems.
Best seasons: Jan-Feb and Aug-Sept (dry, clear). June-Sept good. Avoid April-May (long rains). Altitude sickness real—4,000m+ serious. Acclimatize properly.
Mt Kenya—Africa's second summit
5,199m extinct volcano, 150km north of Nairobi. Point Lenana (4,985m) accessible to fit hikers without technical skills. Batian/Nelion peaks require mountaineering gear.
Naro Moru Route (4 days)—fastest, steepest. Dense forest, bamboo, Vertical Bog (brutal), high-altitude moorland. Direct but tough. Most popular. Around $800-1,000 per person.
Chogoria Route (5 days)—most scenic. Gorges, tarns, Lake Michaelson, alpine meadows. Gentler ascent, better acclimatization. More expensive ($900-1,200) due to longer duration.
Sirimon Route (4-5 days)—good middle option. Steady ascent, decent scenery, joins Chogoria for summit. Popular with experienced trekkers. Around $850-1,100.
Summit push at 3am—freezing temperatures (-10°C), darkness, altitude. Reach by sunrise for views. Many turn back—altitude sickness, cold, exhaustion. Success rate around 60-70%. "Pole pole" (slowly) is key.
Mt Elgon—underrated giant
4,321m on Kenya-Uganda border. Eighth-highest in Africa. Less crowded than Mt Kenya. Massive caldera (8km wide). Unique ecosystem.
Vegetation zones: montane forest (2,000-2,500m), bamboo and podocarpus (3,000m), heath with wildflowers (3,000-3,500m), moorland with giant groundsels (3,500m-summit).
Best months: Dec-Feb (driest), though area can be wet year-round. Jan-Feb ideal. Prepare for rain any time. Waterfalls abundant from mountain springs.
Access from Kitale (Kenya side) or Mbale (Uganda side). Road access only—drive or hire transport from Kitale. 3-4 day treks typical. Guides mandatory—hire at park gates.
Caves with elephants—Kitum Cave famous for elephants mining salt from walls. Unique wildlife behavior. Camping near caves possible. Around $500-800 for 4-day trek including guides, porters, camping.
Great Rift Valley escarpments
Dramatic cliffs dropping to valley floor. Viewpoints at Narok, Limuru, Mai Mahiu. Free access, stunning photography, sunrise/sunset golden hour magic.
Mt Longonot—2,776m dormant volcano, Great Rift Valley floor. Hike crater rim (3-4 hours). Steep but spectacular 360° views. Day trip from Nairobi. Entry KES 300 ($2.50).
Ngong Hills—2,460m, just outside Nairobi. Four peaks, rolling grassland. Karen Blixen's "Out of Africa" farm nearby. Popular weekend hike. 3-4 hours for all peaks. Nairobi skyline views.
Aberdare Range—moorlands, bamboo forests, waterfalls. Lesatima (4,001m) highest peak. Access via Nyeri. Multi-day treks or day hikes. Elephants, buffalo present—guide recommended.
Cherangani Hills (western Kenya)—rolling highlands, indigenous forests, Marich Pass. Less visited. Multi-day treks through traditional communities. Off beaten path.
Altitude and acclimatization
Kenya sits high—Nairobi at 1,795m. You're already acclimatized somewhat. But 5,000m is different. Altitude sickness symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, exhaustion.
Acclimatization strategy: climb high, sleep low. Add rest days. Drink 4+ liters water daily. Avoid alcohol. Consider Diamox (prescription altitude medication). Many trekkers use it.
Mt Kenya requires 3-5 days minimum—rushing increases altitude sickness risk. Tour operators push fast itineraries. Resist. Extra acclimatization day worth it.
Temperature drops 6.5°C per 1,000m elevation gain. Summit temps -5 to -15°C even at equator. Bring proper layering—warm layers, wind shell, insulation, gloves, hat. Mountain huts are cold.
Fitness requirements: Mt Kenya demands good cardiovascular fitness. Train beforehand—hiking with elevation gain, stair climbing, cardio endurance. Technical skill minimal. Fitness and altitude tolerance determine success.

💡 Insider Tips
- ⛰️ Altitude sickness hits at 3,000m+. Symptoms: headache, nausea, exhaustion. Descend immediately if severe. Diamox helps but prescription needed. Many turn back—no shame.
- 🌡️ Summit temps -5 to -15°C even at equator. Bring 4-season gear—down jacket, windproof shell, warm gloves, balaclava. Mountain huts are freezing. Sleep in all your clothes.
- 💧 Drink 4+ liters water daily at altitude. Dehydration worsens altitude sickness. Streams on Mt Kenya safe to drink (high altitude, unpolluted). Carry bottles, refill constantly.
- 📅 Book 2-3 months ahead for peak season (Jan-Feb, Aug-Sept). Operators limit group sizes. Mt Kenya popular. Mt Elgon easier to arrange last-minute.
- 🥾 Break in boots before arriving. Blisters at altitude are miserable. Train beforehand—cardiovascular fitness matters more than strength. Nairobi's 1,795m elevation helps pre-acclimatization.
