Romantic Bahamas

Your complete guide to the Bahamas’ most intimate beaches, private island escapes, and couples experiences

Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island is three miles of blush-coloured sand—the colour comes from microscopic coral fragments mixed into the white—backed by sea grape trees, facing a flat turquoise horizon. The nearest loud bar is not within earshot. This is considered by many couples to have no equal in the Caribbean.

Pearl Island is 15 minutes by ferry from Nassau and it is possible to book a private cabana on it for two, with unlimited drinks, a traditional Bahamian lunch, snorkelling in the lagoon, and nobody close enough to notice you. The water around the island is the colour it is in the photographs. It is exactly that colour in real life.

Nassau at sunset, watched from the deck of a harbour dinner cruise, closes the day slowly and deliberately. The sky runs amber, then orange, then the city lights begin to come on across the harbour. There is no better first evening in the Bahamas.

Pink Sands Beach — Harbour Island

Pink Sands Beach runs for three miles on the Atlantic side of Harbour Island—a tiny island reached by water taxi from North Eleuthera, itself a 20-minute flight or ferry from Nassau. The pink colour is caused by foraminifera—single-celled marine organisms whose red-pink shells mix into the sand in sufficient concentration to shift the visible colour. The effect is most pronounced in the low golden light of early morning and late afternoon.

The beach is consistently rated among the most beautiful in the world and among the top two or three in the Caribbean. In peak season (January–April), it remains quiet by comparison with any comparable beach in the region—Harbour Island’s hotel stock is small and expensive, which naturally limits numbers. There are no jet ski operators on this beach. The sound is the Atlantic swell and wind.

Dunmore Town, the island’s village, has a small main street with restaurants and bars within walking distance of the beach. The Landing Restaurant is the island’s most acclaimed—a colonial house with candlelit tables and a menu that changes daily with whatever came off the boat. Mornings begin with freshly baked pastries from a local bakery and strong coffee on the porch.

Pearl Island — private escape from Nassau

Pearl Island is a small private island 15 minutes by ferry from Nassau, sitting in a sheltered turquoise lagoon with two distinct beach areas. The island is exclusively managed—no day trippers arrive independently. The private cabana experience gives a couple two sunbeds, an ocean-view position, unlimited drinks from the bar, a traditional Bahamian lunch served to the cabana, and access to the snorkelling gear and kayaks.

The ferry departs from East Dock on Paradise Island, behind Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. The crossing takes approximately 15 minutes. On arrival, the island is immediately separated from Nassau’s noise and movement. The snorkelling in the lagoon around the island includes nurse sharks, rays, and reef fish in water shallow enough to stand in on the sand bars.

Booking in advance is essential—private cabana numbers are limited and the island fills quickly in high season. The experience runs for five hours including the ferry transit. The sunset return crossing, with Nassau visible across the water, is a good ending to it.

Nassau Harbour — sunset on the water

Nassau Harbour separates New Providence from Paradise Island. At sunset the buildings on both sides catch the western light and hold it in amber for 15–20 minutes. The dinner cruise departs from the Nassau waterfront and crosses slowly through the harbour, offering an unobstructed view of the cable bridge, the Atlantis towers, and the city skyline from the water—a perspective unavailable from land.

Dinner on board is included—catered, served at tables on deck, with the cruise completing as darkness falls and the city lights appear. Live music accompanies the crossing. The experience is two hours door to door. Dress code is smart casual. It works as a first night, an anniversary, or simply the most effortless way to see Nassau beautifully.

Cable Beach at dusk, on the western side of Nassau, adds an alternative—long flat sand, gentle surf, and the most accessible sunset view from the island. The beach bars along Cable Beach serve cocktails at tables that face directly west, with no land in the way between the sand and the horizon.

Marine Habitat at Atlantis — an intimate underwater world

The Marine Habitat at Atlantis Paradise Island is the world’s largest open-air marine habitat—14 interconnected lagoons, eight million gallons of ocean water, and over 50,000 marine animals representing more than 250 species. Walking through the underwater viewing tunnels with sharks and rays passing overhead is one of those experiences that quiets conversation.

Rated 4.5/5 with nearly 4,000 TripAdvisor reviews and ranked #1 of all things to do on Paradise Island. The habitat is accessible from outside the resort—tickets available at the gate. The aquarium section inside the resort has the largest collection of marine species in the Caribbean. The manta ray tanks and shark lagoon viewing areas are the most extraordinary parts.

The habitat is best visited in the morning before the resort fills with day guests. The adjacent Cain at the Cove beach club at Atlantis offers a quieter adults-only pool option for after. The entire complex is walkable in a morning—allow two to three hours for the marine habitat alone if you want to cover it properly.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🌎 Getting to Harbour Island requires planning: fly or ferry from Nassau to North Eleuthera, then a 5-minute water taxi across the harbour to Dunmore Town. The trip each way takes 1.5–2 hours total. It is absolutely worth it. Book the water taxi in advance during peak season (January–April)
  • 🏖 Pink Sands Beach is most photographic at the golden hour—the pink is deepest when light hits the sand at an angle. Midday light flattens the colour. The northern end of the beach near the lighthouse is quieter than the stretch outside the main hotels
  • 🌅 Pearl Island Private Cabana sells out weeks in advance in high season. Book directly through GetYourGuide or the operator’s website as soon as dates are confirmed. Cancellation policies are typically 24–48 hours free
  • 🌊 The Marine Habitat’s shark lagoon tunnel is most dramatic in early morning before the resort fills. The manta rays are most active when staff move through the habitat—ask a guide when the next feeding is scheduled
  • ⛳ Cable Beach for an evening drink: take a taxi to the Baha Mar resort end of Cable Beach and walk westward along the shore. The beach bars facing west catch the last light. Most are open until 10pm and do not charge a beach access fee for bar guests
