Medieval castles, deep gorges, and Moselle wine

Luxembourg

The waiter sets down a plate. Judd mat Gaardebounen—smoked pork collar with broad beans. You're in a stone-walled restaurant in Luxembourg City's Grund district. Outside, medieval fortifications rise above the river valley. Later, you're at Vianden Castle. It's one of Europe's finest medieval fortresses, restored to its original grandeur. The view stretches across forested hills and the Our River below. Luxembourg is small but layered—ancient and modern, valleys and plateaus, three languages, and surprising depth.

Luxembourg City—UNESCO valleys and modern finance

Luxembourg City sits on dramatic topography. The Old Town occupies a rocky promontory. Below, the Alzette River cuts deep valleys—the Grund and Clausen districts nestle down there.

The Chemin de la Corniche promenade traces 17th-century ramparts along the cliff edge. The view across the valley earned it the nickname "Europe's most beautiful balcony."

The Bock Casemates are underground rock galleries carved beneath the fortress. They're part of the UNESCO World Heritage fortifications that defined the city for centuries.

Modern Luxembourg contrasts sharply—gleaming EU institutions, international banks, and the Kirchberg plateau's contemporary architecture. It's a financial hub with medieval roots.

Public transport has been free throughout the country since 2020. The city tram connects the station, city center, and airport extension opening in 2025.

Vianden and castle country

Vianden Castle dominates the Our River valley. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, it was restored to its medieval appearance in the 20th century.

The castle is open daily from 10am with seasonal closing times. Adult admission is €13 (€11 for groups). An audioguide costs €2 in 11 languages.

Vianden town below the castle is compact and picturesque. Stone houses, cafes, and the river make it worth wandering beyond just the castle visit.

Other castles dot Luxembourg's landscape—Bourscheid, Beaufort, Clervaux. Each occupies a strategic hilltop. Each offers history and views.

Northern Luxembourg is the Ardennes—forested hills, medieval ruins, and mountain biking trails. It's Luxembourg's outdoor activity zone.

Mullerthal—Luxembourg's "Little Switzerland"

Mullerthal earned its nickname from striking sandstone rock formations. The landscape features narrow gorges, caves, dense forest, and mossy cliffs.

The Mullerthal Trail is a 112-kilometer hiking route awarded "Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe." It splits into three routes of varying difficulty.

Echternach is the region's historic center—Luxembourg's oldest town. The St. Willibrord Basilica hosts a UNESCO-listed hopping procession each Whit Tuesday.

The Mëllerdall Nature & Geopark received UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2022, recognizing the geological significance of the rock formations.

With free public transport, trailheads are accessible without a car. Many hikers base themselves in Echternach and explore the surrounding trails.

Moselle wine region and villages

Luxembourg's Moselle Valley runs along the German border. The river creates a microclimate perfect for wine—particularly Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Crémant sparkling wine.

Villages like Remich, Grevenmacher, and Schengen line the river. Yes, that Schengen—the European Agreement was signed here in 1985.

Wine tasting cellars (caves) welcome visitors. Many offer tours and tastings. The Luxembourg Wine Route follows the river with signposted stops.

River cruises and kayaking operate in summer. The valley is flat, making it ideal for cycling between villages and vineyards.

The Moselle contrasts with the rest of Luxembourg—gentler, sunnier, and more Mediterranean in feeling despite the northern latitude.
