7,641 islands of paradise

Philippines

Your boat cuts through turquoise water. Around you, limestone cliffs rise 200 meters straight from the sea. This is El Nido, Palawan—and it's just one of 7,641 islands. Later, you're on Boracay's White Beach at sunset. The sand is powder-soft. Behind you, music from beach bars mixes with waves. The sky turns orange, then pink, then purple. The Philippines does islands better than almost anywhere. Each one offers something different—lagoons, diving, rice terraces, or Spanish colonial towns. It's tropical, friendly, and endlessly surprising.

Manila—chaos and history collide

Manila is the capital. It's chaotic, crowded, and fascinating. The traffic is legendary—sometimes it's faster to walk.

Intramuros is the old walled city. Built by Spanish colonizers between 1571-1606, Fort Santiago and San Agustin Church sit within these walls. Community-led walking tours take you through seven historic churches.

Makati is the modern business district. Glass towers. Shopping malls. International restaurants. It's the Manila expats know.

Manila is also emerging as a major food destination—Michelin Guide is scouting here for the first time in 2026. Street food stalls serve sisig (sizzling pork), adobo, and halo-halo (shaved ice dessert).

Manila isn't always pretty. But it's energetic, historically rich, and worth at least two days before heading to the islands.

Palawan—the island everyone talks about

Palawan is consistently ranked the #1 island in the Philippines. It's defined by exceptional seascapes—limestone karsts, hidden lagoons, and turquoise water.

El Nido is the main draw. Island hopping tours take you to lagoons and beaches only accessible by boat. Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon are the highlights. Nacpan Beach offers long stretches of sand away from crowds.

Coron, 20 minutes by boat, features dramatic limestone formations and some of the best wreck diving in Asia—Japanese ships from World War II sit on the ocean floor.

Puerto Princesa Underground River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You paddle through a cave system—bats hang overhead, limestone formations glow in headlamp light.

Palawan is popular for good reason. Book accommodations early, especially December through April.

Boracay and the beach scene

Boracay is world-famous for White Beach. The sand is powdery—almost unreal. The sunset views are Instagram-perfect.

It's also busy. Very busy. Beach bars, water sports, fire dancers at night. Boracay is the social beach destination.

Station 2 is the party zone. Station 1 is quieter and more upscale. Station 3 attracts budget travelers.

Beyond the beach, Boracay offers kitesurfing, diving, and snorkeling. The island was closed for rehabilitation in 2018 and reopened cleaner and more regulated.

If you want white sand and social vibes, Boracay delivers. If you want quiet, go elsewhere.

Beyond the big three—islands worth the trip

Bohol is famous for the Chocolate Hills—1,200 cone-shaped hills that turn brown in dry season. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary lets you see over 100 of these tiny primates in their natural habitat.

Cebu offers whale shark encounters in Oslob (controversial but popular) and Kawasan Falls—a multi-tiered waterfall with turquoise pools. Cebu City has Spanish colonial architecture and excellent diving nearby.

Siargao is the surf capital. Cloud 9 break is world-class. The island has a laid-back vibe—fewer resorts, more coconut groves and local culture.

Vigan on Luzon's west coast is a UNESCO heritage town. Cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial houses, horse-drawn carriages. It feels like stepping back 300 years.

The Ifugao Rice Terraces in the Cordilleras are 2,000 years old. Carved into mountains, they're still farmed today. The views are stunning, the trek is challenging.
