Taiwan Railways (TRA)

Essential

Book TRA tickets for the east coast — Taipei to Hualien (2 hours), Hualien to Taitung along the Pacific coast. One of Asia's most scenic rail routes. Also covers the Pingxi Line for Jiufen, Shifen, and sky lanterns. Book 5+ days ahead for weekends.

💡 East coast routes sell out — book as early as possible

Open CWA

✈️ Flight Search & Booking

Google Flights

Best overall flight search. Price tracking, flexible dates, and the cleanest interface. Use the calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly. EVA Air and China Airlines — Taiwan's carriers — are both excellent long-haul options.

Open Google Flights

Skyscanner

"Everywhere" search shows cheapest destinations from your home airport. Perfect for spontaneous trips. Whole-month search helps find cheapest travel windows. Good for finding connecting routes via Tokyo, Seoul, or Singapore to Taipei.

Open Skyscanner

Hopper

Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Set alerts and book at the perfect moment. Can save significantly on long-haul flights to Taiwan from Europe and North America.

Open Hopper

Kiwi.com

Best for complex multi-city routes. Can combine airlines that don't normally work together. Great for Asia multi-stop itineraries — Taiwan + Japan + South Korea, for example.

Open Kiwi.com
💡 PRO TIP: Compare, Then Book Direct

Use these apps to find the best prices and routes — but book directly on the airline's website.

Why? Third-party bookings can cause headaches with:

  • Customer service runaround
  • Difficult changes & cancellations
  • Lost perks and seat selection
  • Complicated refunds

The few dollars you might save isn't worth the hassle when things go wrong.

🗺️ Navigation & Maps

Google Maps

Essential

Works excellently in Taiwan. Shows real-time MRT, bus, and HSR routing. Download offline maps before your trip — essential for mountain areas. Night market hours, temple locations, and restaurant reviews are generally accurate and recent.

💡 Download Taipei, Hualien, Tainan, Kenting offline maps

Open Google Maps

Maps.me

Detailed offline maps with hiking trails. Better than Google for Taiwan's national park trails — Taroko, Alishan, Yangmingshan. Completely offline once downloaded. Essential for mountain routes where cell coverage can be patchy.

💡 Download Taroko, Alishan, Yangmingshan national park maps

Open Maps.me

Open Rome2Rio

Uber Taiwan

Open Uber

Open Airbnb

💬 Translation & Communication

Google Translate

Essential

Download the Traditional Chinese offline language pack before arriving. Camera translation mode reads menus, temple signs, and street signs instantly. Most younger Taiwanese speak some English but Traditional Chinese helps a lot in rural areas and with older residents.

💡 Download Traditional Chinese offline — not Simplified

Open Google Translate

Line

Essential

The messaging app of Taiwan — everyone uses it. Hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and locals communicate via Line rather than WhatsApp or SMS. Hotels often send check-in details via Line. Set up your profile before arrival.

  • ✅ Google Maps (download offline maps: Taipei, Hualien, Tainan, Kenting)
  • ✅ Google Translate (download Traditional Chinese offline pack)
  • ✅ THSR app (if visiting multiple cities by high speed rail)
  • ✅ TRA app (if visiting Hualien, Jiufen, or east coast)
  • ✅ Line (important for communicating with Taiwanese hosts)
  • ✅ CWA Weather (essential June–October for typhoon tracking)
  • ✅ Booking.com / Airbnb with confirmations saved offline
  • ✅ Wise card loaded with NTD or ready for ATM withdrawals

💡 App & Tech Tips for Taiwan

  • SIM card at the airport: Buy a tourist SIM immediately at arrivals — Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, or Far EasTone. NTD 300–600 for 7–30 days unlimited data. eSIM available for pre-order.
  • EasyCard is essential: Buy one at the airport MRT station (NTD 100 deposit) and load NTD 500–1,000. Works on MRT, bus, YouBike, and many shops. Faster than cash for everything.
  • Power banks in the mountains: Mountain hiking areas and east coast remote spots can have limited charging options. Bring a power bank — and keep it warm on cold mountain mornings.
  • Screenshot train tickets: THSR and TRA mobile tickets — screenshot and save. Cell coverage in some mountain tunnels on the east coast line can be spotty.
  • 7-Eleven ibon kiosks: Print tickets, pay bills, buy event tickets. If you need a physical train ticket or entry ticket, 7-Eleven kiosks handle it — instructions available in English.
  • Typhoon updates: Follow CWA on social media as well as the app. Typhoon alerts often break on Line news feeds before reaching English-language sources.
