🏖️ Beach & Sun in Taiwan

The scooter leans into a corner and the Pacific opens up below you — deep blue to the horizon, a coral sand beach at the base of a 200m cliff. You pull over. Nobody else is here. You descended the switchback road alone, the engine's quiet now, and the only sounds are waves and wind in the acacia trees above.

Taiwan is a Pacific island. Three hundred kilometres of coastline face the open ocean on the east. The south has the coral beaches. Green Island and Orchid Island offer some of Asia's clearest water. The north coast, wilder and rockier, has cave beaches and sea arches. The west coast is generally flat and tidal — industrial, not scenic. Go east and south for beaches.

Kenting at the southern tip is Taiwan's beach resort — crowds, bars, consistent sun, and the warmest water. For solitude and extraordinary scenery, the east coast's hidden coves are harder to reach but worth it.

Kenting — Taiwan's Beach Capital

Kenting National Park at Taiwan's southern tip has the warmest, clearest water on the main island — water temperatures 24–28°C year-round, consistently sunny skies from March–October. The main Kenting beach is 1km of golden sand with surf rental, banana boats, parasailing, and beach bars within 200m. Jialeshui Beach 15km east has better waves for surfing (October–March northeast monsoon delivers 1.5–3m swells).

Little Bay (Xiaowan Beach) near the Kenting Main Beach entrance is narrower but cleaner — fewer jet ski operations, better snorkelling over the rocky sections at the beach edges. Baisha Bay (White Sand Bay) 15km north of Kenting is the quietest of the main Kenting beaches — same peninsula, less developed, popular with local families rather than tourist groups.

Accommodation in Kenting ranges from NTD 800 guesthouses to NTD 5,000 beach resort hotels. The best season is October–May — March–October is technically available but hot and occasionally typhoon-disrupted. The iconic Spring Scream music festival runs each April around Kenting with international and local acts on outdoor stages.

Green Island — Pacific Ocean Clarity

Green Island (Lyudao) off the Taitung coast is 50 minutes by ferry from Fugang Harbour. The island's population is 3,000 and the main road around the island perimeter is 20km. Rent a scooter at the ferry pier (NTD 400/day) and circle the island in 2 hours. The water clarity is extraordinary — 15–30m visibility, coral gardens, sea turtles, tropical fish visible from the surface.

Dabaisha White Sand Beach on the island's northeast is the most swimmable — soft white coral sand, moderate waves, lifeguards in season. Shaozhuo Bay has snorkelling directly from the beach over a shallow coral garden. The Chaogri Hot Spring — one of only three saltwater hot springs in the world — pumps 93°C water into coastal pools where you soak as Pacific waves crash around you. Entry NTD 200, open 24 hours.

Orchid Island and the East Coast

Orchid Island (Lanyu) is home to the Tao indigenous people, 90km east of Taitung. The island is more remote than Green Island — less touristy, more culturally significant. The Tao's traditional flying fish ceremony (March–June) and carved wooden boats are living traditions, not performances. Swimming at Cypen Bay on the north coast is excellent with minimal crowds. Stay at least 2 nights to understand the island's character.

The east coast main island has hidden beaches accessible mainly by scooter on the Suhua Highway. Qixingtan Beach in Hualien — black pebble beach with dramatic mountain backdrop — is one of Taiwan's most photographed. The stones are flat and smooth; it's a beach for walking and photographs rather than swimming (no sand, strong current). Sunrise here, with cloud-capped mountains behind, is extraordinary.
