You step off the boat. The dive resort is a low cluster of bungalows on a hillside above Koror’s harbour, and through the window of your room you can see the Rock Islands in the distance, their mushroom shapes silhouetted against the late afternoon light.

Palau is not a mass tourism destination. There are no beach resorts with a thousand rooms, no strip of bars, no cruise ship terminal. What it has is a concentrated cluster of hotels and dive resorts in Koror, a handful of guesthouses, and a small number of private island properties for those willing to pay for total seclusion.

Palau is expensive relative to most Pacific destinations. Budget travellers should expect US$80–120 per night at a guesthouse, US$150–300 at a mid-range dive resort, and US$400 and above at boutique properties. Dive packages — accommodation plus daily diving — are often the most economical option for visitors who are here primarily to dive.
